Description

THE EFFECTS OF BLENDED APPROACH TO LEARNING AS PERCEIVED BY THE SECONDARY EDUCATION STUDENTS OF ISU-ECHAGUE CAMPUS

A Research Paper presented to the Faculty of the College of Education ISABELA STATE UNIVERSITY Echague, Isabela

In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Subject The Teacher and the Community (Qualitative Research)

by JOHN MENDONEZ May 2020

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Instruction in learning is the purposeful direction of the learning process. It can be any activity that transfer or impart knowledge and skills from one person to another. Nowadays, facilitators of learning have two common options on what particular medium of instruction they will employ: traditional(face-to-face) and online instruction(virtual). Some favors purely face-to-face instruction for it has been the standard for centuries and some also agreed upon using purely online instruction to go over what is trend today. Face-to-face is readily recognize as the “real” way of teaching and learning since individuals must be physically present for live interaction on a classroom setting. It helps learners organized their studies because they need to be somewhere at a specific time and date. On the other hand, as a result of technological advancement, online teaching and learning continue to evolve. People began to learn what that meant and how that could mediate the learning experience much more directly providing also more flexible access to content and instruction at any time, from any place. It also offers the capability to support both real-time and asynchronous communication such as email, newsgroups and threaded discussion boards between instructors and learners as well as among different learners. In comparing the two mediums, we are not saying that traditional should be discontinued or online to be disregarded. However, for some teachers and trainers, online can supplement face-to-face teaching and learning by means of what they call “blended approach” where both methods are combined to maximize results. In an article published by Nicole Gorman (2016), it was stated that (1) compared with traditional teaching and learning, blended approach allows students to review electronic materials as often as necessary and at their own pace which likely enhances learning performance, and (2) compared with e-learning and teaching, in blended approach, learners are less likely to experience feelings of isolation or reduced interest in the subject matter.

Ime Morales in her article Blended Learning: Education beyond the Classroom, she quoted the statement of Joanne Tupas-Parsons, founder of the Center for Blended learning in Cubao, “there are things that we can teach our children at home, but there are also benefits to be obtained from learning with peers and mentors. It is essentially blending the best of many worlds: the home where they learn values, get their sense of self, build their foundation and the school where the core subjects are taught.” Blended approach offers the learner convenience and flexibility for they have the ability to control their learning pace and can learn remotely. Furthermore, it allows learners to interact with instructors and fellow learners which supports social learning. This study had been conducted with an aim to find out the perceptions of students on the impact of supplementing face-to-face instruction with online instruction or blended approach to their learning. Moreover, this qualitative study had been conducted to know the similarities and differences of online, face-to-face and blended teaching and learning. Conceptual Framework Several studies had already been conducted to determine the effects of blended approach to learning. The researchers consider it important to explore the impact of combination of modern and traditional teaching strategies to support the achievements of students. Despite some negative comments, most feedbacks and studies favors blended approach as a better mode of instruction. A.U.S Department of Education (2010) meta-analysis of blended learning found that students in online conditions performed modestly better, on average, than those learning the same material through traditional face-to-face instruction. However, their findings do not demonstrate that online learning is superior as a medium. Instead, it was the combination of elements in the treatment conditions which was likely to have included additional opportunities for collaboration that produced the observed learning.

Another study by Susan and Chris (2015) pointed out that the most salient benefits of blended learning are: it is more effective in its use of classroom time, students are more active, students will be more creative, students are better prepared, it is more interesting for students, and it provides the possibility of offering many educational resources for students.

Effects of Blended Approach to Learning as perceived by the respondents

Statement of the Problem The study aimed to find out and describe the impact of blended approach in learning as perceived by students.

Specifically, it intended to answer the following: 1. What are the similarities and differences of online, traditional and blended mode of instruction? 2. What are the perceptions of Secondary Education Students on using blended approach or supplementing face-to-face instruction with online instruction in terms of learning?

Scope and Delimitations of the Study This qualitative study is limited to the perceptions on the impact of blended approach to learning enhancement. The researcher focused on the perceptions of Secondary Education Students at Isabela State University, Echague Campus for the Second Semester S.Y. 2019-2020.

Significance of the Study Selecting what mode of instruction to be use is crucial both for teachers and students. Blended Approach to learning is highly recommended by most researchers. Through this piece of qualitative study, the following will then be benefited, Teachers. This study will serve as a reliable guide for them to better manage student-teacher adjustments in terms of learning process. It will also help them to meet the students’ level of knowledge and interest. Students. This will help them understand the combination of online and traditional approaches in teaching and learning and can help them figure out what approach best suits them. It will also guide them in learning at their own pace. Parents. This will help them be reminded of the things they should know and possess in order to stay connected with new programs like blended learning in their child’ s school. Administrators. This can be their basis to construct policies which will favor student- centered teaching and learning. Future Researchers. This can be one of their basis that will also help them in researching related problems and subjects similar to this study.

Definition of Terms Blended Approach – an approach to education that combines online educational materials and opportunities for interaction online with traditional place- based classroom methods Blended learning – a style of education in which students learn via electronic and online media as well as traditional face-to-face teaching.

Online Instruction – any formal educational process in which the instruction occurs when the learner and the instructor are not in the same place and internet technology is used to provide a communication link among the instructor and students. Traditional Instruction – a method of instruction that is teacher-centered, rather than learnercentered in which the focus is on rote learning and memorization.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY This chapter presents the tools, respondents and design used by the researcher in gathering the necessary data needed for the study. It aims to explain how these data were analyzed, interpreted and presented in the easiest way possible. Research Design The researcher employed the qualitative approach in obtaining the data needed for the study. On knowing the perceptions on the impact of blended approach to learning, this study used a questionnaire. Purposive sampling was used to determine the respondents. The study used a descriptive research design which tend to gather information on current situations and conditions. Locale and Respondents of the Study The study was conducted during the Second Semester of the School Year 2019-2020. Out of ___ students, there were ___ secondary education students of the College of Education, Isabela State University, Echague Campus who were considered as the respondents in the study. Research Instrument The researcher made a 10- item questionnaire to gather the data needed for the study. Open-ended questions were used to generate answer to what the study is looking for. Data Gathering Procedure Interview was used as the mode to gather data. The researcher has followed certain procedure in the conduct of the study. 1. Knowing the respondents brief background. The researcher needs to know first the background information of the respondents to know if they can be qualified for the respondents of the study. 2. Securing the confidentiality. The researcher assured the respondents that any of their information recorded will not be share in public and their names will mot be revealed in the study.

3. Preparing the instrument. The researcher prepared the questions that will be used for the interview. 4. Informing about the questions. The researcher informed the respondents about the questions for their clarification. 5. Starting the interview.
