1. When Hutchinson talks about the food chain he does not take into account the optimal foraging theory, were the foraging behavior of animals can strongly improve the quality of the food intake by making "decisions" about where to look for food, how long to stay in an area, how to search, and what foods to pursue and eat. It is not just a matter of quantity of food in the chain, but also the quality of it and the time that animals spend on foraging, right?
2. A more heterogeneous environment allows the coexistence of more species. What happens if a species becomes less demanding and starts to occupy the full diversity of the heterogeneous environment (increasing its niche)? Will other species be extinct or not, braking the advance of the adapting species? How to measure the resiliense of the system?...
