Description

HIS-102, Spring 2019: Primary Source Questionnaire NAME:Emily Gross. DATE:01/28/19. CLASS TIME:12:30-1:45 Type of Document: Letter Document(s) date:1623 Author (creator) of document: Richard Frethorne Position/Occupation/Title of Author: Servant Intended Audience? Mother and Father

Document information and narrative (Summarize in 5 or more sentences): Richard Frethorne was writing to his mother and father in 1623 about how horrible and tiring being a servant was. He described as to how he lived/survived when working for the Englishmen. He worked hard on the plantations as to wish he earned his food to eat. He begged his parents to send over good profit to his master to redeem him. He also described his hardships of the Indians stealing from them, very little to eat, and if the master had too many servants, he would release some of them to abandoned land to eat nothing but what was there. (Tree bark and moulds of the ground.)

List at least three quotes that you think are critical to understanding the importance of the source? “Ffore I doe protest unto you, that I have eaten more in a day at home than I have allowed me here for a weeke.” “the answere of this letter wilbee life or death to me” “wee are as lile to perish first as anie plantation”

Despite what the introduction mentions, why do you think this document was written? This letter was written by Richard to his parents to describe his slave life and to tell them to send “great profit” to the merchants to redeem him.

What historical questions can you answer using this source? How much bread or goods did the servant earn after one week of work on the plantations? Who killed and stole from the English men?

Write a question to the author that is left unanswered by the document? How were the servants/slaves allowed to write letters to their families?

How might this document have changed American society after it was written? American society would now know how servants in Virginia had been treated. Now it is clear that they were worn down by hard work on the plantations with very little food....
