Description

“Race for the Double Helix” Questions BIOL 101 – Spring 2017 Bring Assignment to Exam #5 Daniel Shin 1. What were your first impressions of the main characters? James Watson: Excited (For DNA, and the theories of “Genetics secrets”)

Francis Crick: More Interactive, (Believes in his studies)

Rosalind Franklin: Pays Attention to the theories, (French women)

Maurice Wilkins: Loves Studying DNA.

2. Compare the research approaches/ styles/ attitudes of Watson and Crick with those of Franklin. Do you think Franklin should have shared her information more freely with the others? Do you think she should have worked more closely with Wilkins? Why? Why not? Watson and Crick are adamant on finding the DNA in the Nuclei Acid, both believed in their work. Franklin was more reserved, they would have made more advancements if they worked together.

3. Do you think Watson may have had a valid point when he told Rosalind that a "fresh" look "at her work may be what was needed? Explain your answer. Yes, by having a second set of eyes; Watson could have seen some of the information that was overlooked. Rosalind was not happy about it.

4. What important relationship between DNA nucleotides did Watson and Crick discover? What methods did they use to accomplish this? The Double Helix and they created a model

5. When Franklin finally had the opportunity to look at the DNA double-helix model constructed by Watson & Crick, what was her response? (write a couple of sentences summarizing what she felt and what she said) Franklin didn’t agree with the model, because of the lack of water molecules for bonds. She was uncertain on the bonds of the model. She believed that the model was wrong.

6. What was Wilkin’s response? He wanted to confront Franklin about the model. He wanted to explain that the model did not need water molecules.

7. What were your later impressions of the main characters? James Watson: His attention was on the DNA project.

Francis Crick: Set on understanding DNA, Even through different obstacles.

Rosalind Franklin: Misunderstood by her male coworkers, is dedicated.

Maurice Wilkins: Wasn’t keen on working with Rosalind.

8. Who was awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of DNA structure? In your opinion, were the Nobel Prizes awarded fairly? Why or why not? Which person do you think played the most important role in the discovery of DNA structure? Explain your answer. The award was given to the male scientists except for Rosalind. I believe it was awarded unfairly. Rosalind put a lot of dedication and time on this discovery and should have been recognized for her work in this discovery.

9. Which person do you think played the least important role in the discovery of DNA structure? Explain your answer. Wilkins, he was not dedicated as the other scientists on the discovery of the DNA structure. He discredited the model and was not cooperative in this discovery....
