reduction and oxidation reactions. ...

Description

Redox: Oxidation and Reduction (redox): Oxidation: loss of electrons by an atom or ion. (Mg Mg+2+ 2e-1) Reduction: gain of electrons by an atom or ion S+2e-1  S-2 These two processes always occur at the same time. Reactions that involve these processes are called “oxidation-reduction reactions” The substance that is oxidized is called the reducing agent The substance that is reduced is called the oxidizing agent LEO the lion say GER  

LEO- Loss of electrons; oxidation GER- Gain of electrons; reduction

Oxidation Numbers- oxidation sates: 

Used to identify what has been oxidized and reduced in a redox reaction

Recognizing Redox Reactions: 

If there is a change in oxidation number for a particular type of atom, the reaction is redox

Identifying oxidation and reduction:  

The atom that shows an increase in oxidation number had undergone oxidation The atom that shows a decrease in oxidation number had undergone reduction.

Half-Reactions:  

A half-reaction shows either the oxidation or reduction portion of a redox reaction, including electrons gained or lost. Must be conservation of mass (same number of each type of atom on both sides of equation) must be conservation of charge (same net charge- (not necessarily zero) on both sides of equation.)...
