TO: Helen Layton, director of Student Services at Laval University FROM: Axelle Berthelot, student at Laval University DATE: April 3, 2019 SUBJECT: Quality of life at Alphonse-Marie Parent dormitory building This report examines the quality of life at Alphonse-Marie Parent building located at 2255 University St. on the campus of Laval University. As I used to live in this dormitory building during two sessions, I gathered information according to my own experience and my friends’ experiences. I will detail the following elements: cooking facilities, social activities, tidiness, living space. 1. Cooking facilities The kitchen in this building is located on the 1 st floor. There are about 20 hobs and sinks for students to prepare their meals. Behind the kitchen, there are many tables, toasters, microwaves and ovens so that students can share meals with their friends. For the summer, there are also some outside tables and barbecues. In addition to this, each student owns a locker near the kitchen in which he/she can store his/her cooking tools, pans, stuff to wash the dishes and some food. 2. Social activities As this dormitory is the biggest among the four dormitories, it offers a lot of activities that enables students to make friends and to leave their room for a few hours. Depending on the season, many activities are organized such as volleyball games, Russian discussion, cultural meals, outing at Siberian spa. On the 1 st floor, there are some rooms for students to watch TV together, to play video games or simply to study. Also, students meet each other thanks to rooms and the common bathrooms. I met many of my good friends in the elevator or in the corridor because at the beginning, everyone is alone. 3. Tidiness When dealing with tidiness, this dormitory isn’t the very good place for a maniacal student. As it hosts more than 1000 students who like to party, there are some areas where it is not a good idea to walk barefoot. Despite those moments, the dormitory is overall clean thanks to the incredible cleaning staff who cleans the area everyday. I developed the strategy to cook my meals for the entire day at 9:00 AM when the kitchen is clean and not crowded. 4. Living space In a general way, I would say that living in that dormitory building is very good so someone who just arrived in the country, the price is attractive (355$ per month) and you are very close to the

campus at any time. When I arrived from France, it was so convenient to have a furnished room with just some stuff to buy such as the fridge. A company called ‘Polar’ rents fridges and microwaves; this is a good deal. Living in that place is also suitable to make friends, as I said above; we all live together, so you will meet and talk with your neighbors. However, I think that it is quite annoying to sleep, to eat, to wash and to study in the same room. Therefore, I would advice someone to live in the dormitory during one or two sessions and then, get roommates. There are many apartments very close to the university, and at a very attractive price. In conclusion, Alphonse-Marie Parent dormitory building is a convenient place for new students or for exchange students. There are lots of activities and the place is convenient to study, to cook and to make friends from all over the world. The advantage is also that the dormitory is connected to all the underground system so you can go to your class without going outside if you don’t want to....
