Mechanical Workshop Practice 2 DJJ20042 1) INTRODUCTION THEORY

Lathe is a tool that used to create an object which has symmetry about an axis of rotation. It can perform various operations such as cutting, knurling, drilling, facing, turning, sanding and deformation. This machine just operate round workpiece but it can accommodate with the varying workpiece lengths. The workholding method used was clamping the work using chuck or collet for the short workpiece and rotating lathe center was used in addition for the long workpiece. Lathe used in woodturning, metalworking, metal spinning, thermal spraying, parts reclamation, and glass-working. Examples of object that can be produced using the lath include chess, baseball bats, candlestick holder, a shafts, bowl and table legs. Today both manual and CNC lathes machine coexist in the manufacturing industries.

OBJECTIVES

a) To practice the theory. b) To increase understanding by using the practical method. c) Know how to operate and create the object manually using the lathe machine. d) Enchane the skills on lathe machining operation.

3) APPARATUS AND EQUPMENTS

a)Aluminium

A silvery white, soft and ductile metal. The chief ore of aluminium is bauxite. Low density of metal and can resist the corrosion.widely used in cooking utensis, transportasion and packaging.

b) Lathe machine machine used to produce the partwhere the turning, facing, taper, grooving and knurling process operation can be done.

c) Vernier calliper

Measure the object part with 0.02 mm precision.

d) Cutting tool

Sharp tool bit used to remove the unwanted surface to produce a part. e) chuck key

Used to tighten the chuck for clamping process

g) Parting off tool A blade like cutting tool plunged directly into the workpiece to cut off the workpiece at a specific length.

Mechanical Workshop Practice 2 DJJ20042 4) Procedures a) Turn on the lathe machine. b) Set up the workpiece at the lathe machine, make sure that workpiece was placed at the center of the chuck. c) Measure the length and diameter of the workpiece before cutting processes was made

any

d) First process is turning.remove the outer surface using rough cut with low speed of feeding e) Second process is parting off, by using the parting tool to make depth cut according diameter in the project. f) Third one is drilling process. Using the drill to make a hole in the workpiece g) Next step is using the parting off tool to make big hole starting from base of the workpiece with diameter and depth according the project. h) The last process is chamfer process.by rotate the tool holder with 45 degree angle.then make the cut at the top of the workpiece.

Mechanical Workshop Practice 2 DJJ20042 Project analysis ● The project consists of 3 main divisions :● 1. Down ● 2. Middle ● 3. Top Bottom :● • Rectangular shape on the outside. ● • First part with a depth of 9 mm and a diameter of 39 mm ● • The second part with a depth of 7 mm and a diameter of 21 mm ● • And the third part with a depth of 5.6 mm and a diameter of 18 mm Central part :● • Rounded and 35 mm in diameter with a height of 6.4 mm ● • On the inside there is one hole as a result of drilling with a diameter of 18 mm Top part :● • Rounded and has a taper at the top with a taper angle measure of 6 degrees celsius, 39 mm in diameter and 24.5 mm in height ● • The inside also has one part of the hole with a diameter of 18 mm

Mechanical Workshop Practice 2 DJJ20042 Discussion As a result of this project, there was a slight error in the process of applying, which caused the lack of diameter of the project from its proper measurement. This practice requires high precision During the use of the lathe machine especially when applying so as not to lack the diameter of the product from its original size. The use of an lathe machine to make tapers is also worth noting.

Conclusion and recommendation Page 9 of 10

Mechanical Workshop Practice 2 DJJ20042 The conclusion that can be made from this project is that this aluminum project is a material whose material is softer than iron which requires a relatively fast rotation when it is moving so that there is no error in the product. This practice has helped students to know about the use of the lathe machine, about the proper turn force during the miling process, the use of tapers and the use of Vernier caliper that are more commonly used.
