ABSTRACT Many schools and universities worldwide suspended classroom teaching due to the novel coronavirus pandemic and switched to online teaching. The current cross-sectional study was carried out and analyze the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on the academic performance of senior highschool students.Student especially senion highschool were invited to answer an online form questionnaire.A total of 30 participants were from different schools answered the questionnaire with response rate of 94.1%.The data showed that COVID-19 pandemic lockdown affected the academic performance of most participants.Although online education provides an opportunity for self-study,the main challenge that online education faces in senior highschool is how to give practical lesson.Since most of the subject are practical; Therefore,it is not easy to learn it online.Students think that it is difficult to fulfill the senior high school competencies only with online education system. CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19) is firstly identified in Wuhan city,Hubei Province of China in December 2019 as a pneumonia of unknown origin.Later, the international committee on taxonomy of viruses (ICTV) Idebnifies the causative agent of COVID-19 as a novel coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2).COVID-19 outbreak spreads rapidly not only in China ,but also worldwide, therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced it as pandemic on March 12,2020.The total number of confirmed cases and mortalities are 23,491,520 and 809,970, respectively in 216 countries as of Augut 25,2020. Several governmental measure have been taken to counteract the risk of disease spreading .These measures include travel restriction, mandatory quarantines for travelers, social distancing ,bans on

public gatherings ,schools and universities closure, business closeures, selfisolation, asking people to work at home, curfews ,and lockdown.Authorities in several countries worldwide have declared either lockdown or curfew as a measure to break the fast spread of virus infection. These measures have a negative worldwide effect on the business, tourism, health and education. Thus,Education is an important tool which is very useful in everybody’s life.It empowers humans and gets them ready to face challenges of life efficiently. With that being said, education still remains a luxury and not a necessity in our country. As Nelson Mandela says, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Education is the most important tool you can receive, that can bring you most success in society today. As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded this year, Most governments around the world have temporarily closed educational institutions in an attempt to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. These nationwide closures are impacting hundreds of millions of students. Several other countries have implemented localized closures impacting millions of additional learners.UNESCO is supporting countries in their efforts to mitigate the immediate impact of school closures, particularly for more vulnerable and disadvantaged communities, and to facilitate the continuity of education for all through remote learning. Meanwhile, learning performance talks about how do the students is accomplishing his or her duties ,responsibilities and studies. There are some factors that determine the status and the rate of students.learning performance what you have shown you can do in a certain subject.Ability is a talent, skill or proficiency in a particular area.It is what you can do,given ideal circumstances. You can think of its as being internal and hidden until you saw what you can do with your performance. Performance is the execution of an action, something accomplished. It is external and what people see.It usually implies being taught,in the world of education learning may be used a lot ,but on closer inspection the term can be standing in for distinctly different processes such as

teaching, producing, performing according to certain criteria, and so on.Learning achievement or learning performance is the outcome of education, the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their education goals.Learning achievement is commonly measured by examinations or continous assessment but there is no general agreement on how it is best tested on which aspect are most important procedural knowledge such as skills or declarative knowledge such as facts. While remote learning and remote work opportunities have been growing for quite some time regardless of the pandemic, the current need to social distance has led to massive adoption of remote processes. Professionals who may have been well equipped to handle web conferencing and remote training are even struggling. When you consider the needs of today’s students and how they are adjusting, the concerns are much greater. Students thrive when given opportunities to collaborate and converse with peers. They grow from classroom discussions and social interactions with classmates, both academically and socially. Now, they’re being deprived of these opportunities to do so in person. This is not to say that discussions cannot be achieved virtually, but the success of these depends greatly on the teacher or facilitator to ensure their effectiveness. Teachers are tasked with finding ways to encourage the social interaction and engagement of their remote students. Parents are tasked with ensuring their kids are logging on and participating effectively. Teachers and parents are both concerned with ensuring these kids are given ample opportunities to interact with their peers for social growth. Understanding the factors that influences/affects academic performance is a major area of interest worldwide. Many studies have been conducted to determine the factors that influences academic performance across the world because of the pandemic. Some factors that has been studied in relations to academic performance are school

environment/climate, parent educational background, socio economic status, learning styles among other factors.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Thus,The purpose of this study was to look for the effect of covid-19 pandemic and examine the factors that were significant in influencing/affecting academic performance in senior secondary school students in academic performance. This will explicitly answer the following questions: 1.What is the profile of the respondents in terms of: a. Grade level b.Strand c.Age d.Parents Occupation 2.What is the Impact of Cobid-19 Pandemic to the respondents in terms of: a.Academic performance b.Health c.Career choice and development 3.Is there a significant relationship between the the academic performance of SHS Students and the New normal setting of education? 4.What implication may be drawn from the result of the study to enhance the academic performance of SHS students?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY The Researchers believe that this research will contribute meaningfully in understanding, analyzing and coping up with the said problem to the following:senior high school students and their academic performance ,and the new normal setting of education. To the students, especially to the senior high school, the result may serve as an inspiration for them to continuously improve their skills, and performance inspite of this pandemic that we’re going through. To the teachers, the study may serve as a guide for them ,on how they will approach and encourage their student to cope up with their activities and performance that need to comply. DEFINITION OF TERMS The following terms are defined operationally as well as conceptually based on how they are use in the study. Pandemic- A pandemic is a disease outbreak that spreads across countries or continents. It affects more people and takes more lives than an epidemic. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 to be a pandemic when it became clear that the illness was severe and that it was spreading quickly over a wide area. New normal- A new normal is a phrase that denotes a condition, behavior, or state of things that is atypical but then becomes baseline casting a long-lasting effect. It is used as a term in discourse describing a state to which an economy and society settles following a crisis to emphasize that it differs from the prior situation. The term has been employed in relation to the World War I, financial crisis of 20072008, September 11 attacks, the aftermath of the 2008–2012 global recession, and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as in counseling. Academic performance- Academic performance is the measurement of student achievement across various academic subjects. Teachers and

education officials typically measure achievement using classroom performance, graduation rates and results from standardized tests Impact- The Oxford English dictionary gives two definitions of the word impact: 'the action of one object coming forcibly into contact with another' and 'a marked effect or influence' Education- 1a : the action or process of educating or of being educated also : a stage of such a process. b : the knowledge and development resulting from the process of being educated a person of little education. 2 : the field of study that deals mainly with methods of teaching and learning in schools. Distance learning, also called distance Distance learningeducation, e-learning, and online learning, form of education in which the main elements include physical separation of teachers and students during instruction and the use of various technologies to facilitate student-teacher and student-student communication. Distance learning traditionally has focused on nontraditional students, such as fulltime workers, military personnel, and nonresidents or individuals in remote regions who are unable to attend classroom lectures.

CHAPTER 2 REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE This chapter provides a related literature that contains some background and alternative knowledge imperative for the present study. The fight against the threats to COVID-19 pandemic suffered profound effects and impacts on almost all sectors in the human race. These have resulted in the widespread disruption such as travel restrictions (Chinazzi et al., 2020), closure of schools (Viner et al., 2020), global economic recession (Fernandes, 2020), political conflicts (Barrios & Hochberg, 2020), racism (Habibi et al., 2020), and misinformation

and controversies (Enitan et al., 2020), to name a few. One of the most affected is the educational sectors. The COVID-19 pandemic is still existent today, and there are no specific vaccines ormedicines to eradicate this disease. We need to live to the new normal; if not contained, we need to live with the disease as viruses are constantly evolving (Denworth, 2020). The COVID-19 has affected more than 1.2 billion learners worldwide with more than 28 million learners in the Philippines (UNESCO, 2020). Responses like community lockdown and community quarantine of severalcountries have led students and teachers to study and work from home which led to the delivery of online learning platforms (Crawford et al., 2020). However, the implementation of online learning posed different risks, problems and challenges to both the teachers and students, especially in the higher education institutions (HEIs) (Bao, 2020). Lawless (2019) describes blended approach as a learning modality that combines online learning where there is an interaction between teachers and students using specific platform and offline learning wherein students are given time to work on various performance tasks at their own pace. Briones (2020), DepEd Secretary, emphasized that the basic education learning continuity plan in the time of Covid-19 is the response of the department to the challenges posed by Covid-19 in the field of education. She pointed out that education must continue whatever the challenges and difficulties faced now and in the future. Thus, the LCP is an integrated output of the Department in consultations with advisers, legislators, executive directors, teachers, parents, learners and the general public Based on the studies of Ruel F. Ancheta, Ed.D and elen B. Ancheta, MAEd (2020), entitled - The New Normal In Education: A Challenge To The Private Basic Education Institutions In The Philippines, examine and discuss the challenges faced by the private basic education institutions in the Philippines as an effect of the Covid-19 pandemic. This pandemic has brought a dilemma to educational institutions especially when the government announced and ordered not to open face to face classes for Academic Year 2020 - 2021 until the Covid-19 vaccine. In response to this order, the

Department of Education (DepEd) released department order nos. 007, 12, 13, and 14 series of 2020 instructing all basic education institutions to come up with their learning continuity plan (LCP) and health and safety protocols in the new normal in education during the pandemic. The bigger challenge is now passed on to the private basic education schools. One of the basic problems seen by Kasrekar (2020) is the conduct of classes despite of the closure order. As the face-to-face classes pose higher risk of spread, the most viable solution is through online teaching and learning. This platform challenges both the teachers and the students as it occurs something new to them. This calls for an ‘adopt quickly’ response to the new normal in teaching and learning amidst the pandemic (TanhuecoTumapon, 2020). The shift to online learning was too sudden at a very short notice but academic institutions have to strategize and accelerate new forms of teaching pedagogy. The question of how ready the schools are in terms of technical infrastructure is still left unanswered. Re-opening of the schools at this stage is really expensive (Felter&Maizland, 2020). According to Leony Garcia (2020) study, schooleducators are considered as by many children as their second family as these are the parent figures that teach how to read, write, count and so much more. Schools also impart knowledge on nutrition, health and hygiene services; mental health and psychosocial support; and dramatically reduce the risk of violence, early pregnancy and more.Prolonged closure of schools can only have an unfavorable effect on them.Prolonged closures also disrupt essential school-based services such as immunization, school feeding, and mental health and psychosocial support. Loss of peer interaction and disrupted routines also result in stress and anxiety. The new normal education affecting student learning and academic performance because some of the students don’t have gadgets and internet connection to participate in online classes and students rely on their own mode of learning. For example, there is uncertainty about how school closures last spring impacted student achievement, as well as how the rapid conversion of most instruction to an online platform this academic

year will continue to affect achievement. Without data on how the virus impacts student learning, making informed decisions about whether and when to return to in-person instruction remains difficult. Even now, education leaders must grapple with seemingly impossible choices that balance health risks associated with in-person learning against the educational needs of children, which may be better served when kids are in their physical schools.

CHAPTER III PURPOSE OF THE STUDY AND RESEARCH DESIGN, METHODS AND STATISTICAL DATA ANALYSIS PROCEDURE

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY AND RESEARCH DESIGN This quantitative study had two purposes: (a) to determine the effect of COVID-19 pandemic and (b) to examine the factors that were significant in influencing and affecting the academic performance of Senior Secondary School students especially STEM and ICT students in Mary Help of Christians Catholic School. This chapter concentrates on the discussion of the research methods and procedure. The researchers present the factors that affects senior high school academic performance in the new normal setting of education despite of COVID19 pandemic has brought extraordinary challenges and has affected the educational sectors, and no one knows when it will end. This study uses descriptive-case study that seeks to describe and collect data that will give answer to the current research.

METHODS

Participants The participants of this study are the Senior Secondary School- STEM and ICT students in Mary Help of Christians Catholic School for the school year 20212022. From a population size of 30 a sample size of 30.

Data Gathering Instruments The researchers will conduct an online survey which contains questions to gather the needed data. Likewise, qualitative research method was applied for the collected data. As stated in (Factors Affecting Students Academic Performance in 2020-2021) many students who may have been successful in prior academic settings, might be struggling with new hybrid and online teaching environments. Video fatigue is real. The lack of social interaction with classmates is real. Technology challenges are real. The challenges presented to today’s teachers to teach in these remote environments or in-person with half the class are also very real. However, these are challenges being experienced by nearly every single school across not just the US, but the world.

Data Gathering Procedures This study will be conducted during the Second Semester of the school year 2021-2022. The respondents will answer online survey through the means of social media (facebook messenger) as the researchers will send questionnaire to the respondents. This study will be conducted for five days as the researchers will give enough time to respondents to answer the survey. Thereafter, the accomplished questionnaire will be collected and the responses will be tallied, tabulated, analyzed, processed and interpreted. Results or responses were treated with utmost confidentiality.

STATISTICAL DATA ANALYSIS AND PROCEDURE The data gathered will be subjected to descriptive and inferential analysis. Frequency distribution and Percentage. This will be used to determine the number of respondents in all strands.

Recommendations-this year 2020 to 2021 is a huge challenge for teachers and students because of their new study now even if this situation is difficult because it will affect our study but it should not be an obstacle for us all this is our study situation let's make it an inspiration not to give up on learning even if we are not face to face. Still do your part as a student because our situation will give you the experience to improve your study even more because no one will teach you alone you will do everything you will also learn to stand on your own two feet and there will be a bond of bonding with your families even if we say it has negative effects such as we have difficulty understanding, we have difficulty with the internet, no gadgets, and most of all we have difficulty managing time. but everything can be done just self -confidence to overcome it and be patient inspire all the hardships you have gone through so that you achieve your goals in life do not give up. and you have developed a lot more for yourself in today's challenge of learning things that you couldn't do face to face before but now you can do everything like making a video presentation, and you will make even more effort for project, performance task etc. so don't give up face this test trust in your own ability because here you have developed the analysis of the problem and will be forced to understa...
