Review of the Eurogamer Website

2 Review of the Eurogamer Website According to Eurogamers (1999), the journalism website “has grown to cover every aspect of gaming - PC, console, indie, board games and anything else that the team and the site's readers find interesting” (p.1). It is focused on gaming news, reviews, features, videos, forums, and guides to improve gamers’ experience. The website also provides a variety of Entertainment for a Greater Tomorrow (EGTV) shows, digital foundries, and game release dates and updates intended to be viewed by video gamers around the world. The website meets authority and currency, however, it fails to meet objectivity because its negative feedback from video gamers outweighs the positives. To begin, the website meets authority providing helpful links to contact the website’s editorial staff. The links show what each staff member is responsible for, depending on what team they work on. For example, the staff webpage stated that “if you want to get in touch with the editorial team, please use the contact form or Twitter”, and for those seeking news coverage specifically, “please contact the news team”, (The Eurogamer Staff, para. 2). This shows that they stand responsibly for the information they provide to viewers around the world and are available for support in providing information to them and on every communication platform. Therefore, authority makes up an excellent gaming site for Eurogamer because it identifies the authors by their full names and ways to contact them. Furthermore, the website meets currency by updating and publishing their news feed, gaming guides, and release dates for games often. For instance, its technology editor, Richard Leadbetter, recently announced a new update to video gamers, about a game called Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. He stated, “The RTX 3080 Ti is here, and I know what you're thinking why even release an RTX 3080 Ti if the 3080 remains so hard to find?” and that the reason

3 behind this is “chips come off the production line with different levels of quality and performance”, (Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti review, para. 1). Additionally, the website provides the latest and popular news for all gaming platforms. This is especially important because it allows video gamers to know about any delays or upcoming events to expect. It also shows that Eurogamer’s editors are aware that what players are told about a game, and what they are required to do to earn achievements, can be an important element of gaming. In addition, the website fails to meet objectivity because it does not establish goals and purposes based on facts. It does not show any researched and proven facts about their newly developed or updated games. Therefore, the only way to know the results of the game, it to release it and let video gamers play and leave reviews about their experience and what can be done to improve it. The latest updated game, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, led to a lot of controversies where most players found unexpected problems. For instance, gamer Eddie Hitler (2021) wrote a review stating, “I'm tired of NVIDIA and AMD releasing new products and not sorting the supply of those already released, it really takes the mick”, (“Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti review” para. 21”). A lot of other players commented, agreeing with him about the point he stated. This shows that every gamer can state their opinions about newly updated or released games on the Eurogamer website. In addition, advertisements are also used on the website to sway players’ opinions on their experience. This encourages players into a certain pattern of behaviors, such as high expectations and paying for newly released games, features, and updates. As a result, it makes the website’s information biased rather than objective. All in all, the Eurogamer website meets both authority and currency by providing obvious authors’ and publishers’ names, and ensuring the information posted is current and updated. It is easy to locate the author and editor responsible for each information posted because below each

4 information, their names are listed. In addition, the website focuses on popular and latest events to ensure that all the information is in line with other sources related to the topic. However, it does not meet its objectives because liberal opinions are expressed, and negative feedback outweighs the positives. This indicates that players' expectations are not met. The website seems to be concealment for advertising, where the positivity of newly released games is expressed to sway video gamers' choices and opinions. As a result, they get drawn into games with certain expectations and purposes influenced by the game’s advertisements.
