Description

Oladunjoye 1 Oladunjoye Inioluwa Professor Selby English 1101 12 March 2019 Rhetorical Analysis The movie “Meet the Blacks” is a 2016 horror comedy film that starred Mike Epps who acted as Carl Black, a family man and also a laborer who own a wiring business. In the movie, Carl Black stole money and drugs from an arrested criminal Key Flo and left the rural part of Chicago for Beverly Hills with his family. The movie “Meet the Blacks” is a great example of parody. It connects a lot to the horror thriller “The Purge” produced in 2013 and also references some other movies. However, even as a parody movie to “The Purge” the audience can still laugh based on the comedy played in the movie by the actors most specifically Mike Epps who is known for funny videos. In this movie, the main characters Carl Black, Lorena, Allie, Carl Jr, and Cronut chose the wrong time to move to Beverly Hills. The period they moved to their new home was the time where the yearly Purge takes place, for about twelve hours at night where everyone is allowed to commit murder, steal, and do all sorts of crime with the permission of their president. President El Bama whose name is a parody to the former president of the United States Barack Obama delivered the news of the purge on tv, talking about social issues that and crimes that are now prominent in the society and he said: “I am the man of the people, and like you, I got the urge to purge.” The statement was so funny because without the parody a president can’t just make up his mind to kill someone, purge or no purge because he has to set good examples for his citizens. The characters experienced a bit of the purge before taking it seriously when King Bach who acted as Freezee tried to kill Carl Black, because he wouldn’t let him have his way with his daughter. Allie tried to save her family by fighting off Freezee, but in the end, he fell down the stairs banister which led

Oladunjoye 2 to his death. The family was shocked by his death but not Carl Black who decided to take Freezee’s death to the next level by trying to replicate a scene from another movie called “First 48,” by rolling up the dead body and wanting to dispose of it. After getting off a dose of the purge, things began to rattle out where some of the great parodies play out. In the movie when the ring leader of a three men group who are all white called Carl Black a “Nigga” and everyone found it offensive including the other two men who came to kill causing the man in the suit to apologize. Just like in any other horror or thriller movie when someone is about to die, and the victim is being called an offensive name they don’t apologize like the man in the suit did instead they take it too far since the victims are about to die, they don’t care. Another memorable scene was where Mike Tyson who acted as James Clown came to purge Carl for not paying him after he patronized his clowny business and rental house. Carl tried to fight off James Clown, but he ended beating him up and Cronut, and as a former professional boxer he was recognized because of the soundtrack of a boxing match, even if the viewers couldn’t remember has Mike Tyson some would know he has a relation to boxing of some sort. There are other parodies of horror movies throughout the episode that are funny and memorable. For example when the purgers who wanted Carl Black took cronut they weren't concerned about his wellbeing but about other petty things like the stolen money, Cronut’s do-rag. Later on, one of them asked for the rules of what to do in a horror movie, but then Carl thought of an idea and said: “we gotta do the shit that white people don’t do.” Allie replied “Survive” but no she was wrong, Carl then said they have to “get out of there quicker than a cat can lick its ass,” which is impossible because a cat can’t lick its ass. Then Carl jr started mentioning all the horror movies he can think of which is ironic because all the film he said is all starred by white people. The scene catches the audience attention because this scene is the parody and irony of what happens in a horror movie starred by white people and it is rear for a black actor to act in a horror movie which makes this movie funny because it makes the audience think what black people would do in such situations.

Oladunjoye 3 Another great scene of parody played out when a white man dressed up as cultist from the Ku Klux Klan trying to harass Cronut and Mr. Wooky. They were both scared for their lives thinking this was the end since they were both caught by Ku Klux Klan which is known to be a hate group that mostly victimize African Americans. During this chaos, Carl joined in his costume the white man immediately identified him as a black man, they had a little fight, and when it was over, they unmasked the other man in the costume only to find out he is also black. Carl, Cronut and Mr. Wooky were so shocked that they couldn’t believe it was a fellow black man like themselves under the mask. Both the audience who has an idea of what is going and not on laugh at the absurdity of a black man being under the veil of a Ku Klux Klan costume because on a typical day African Americans cant be seen associated with the hate group. In this movie Mike Epps who acted Carl Black captured the audience heart with so much credibility because he is known for an amusing comical act in the film, he starred in since his acting career began. Mike Epps well known for his character Day-Day in the movie “Next Friday” and its sequel “Friday After Next” alongside with Ice Cube who acted as Craig Jones. Mike Epps credibility in both films gives the audience confidence to branch out to other movies he has starred in because the audience trusts his ability in comedy movies even if the film is meaningless and doesn’t make sense the audience can still laugh because Mike Epps is in it. In conclusion, “Meet The Blacks” is a great example of parody that connects a lot to the irony of a horror movie and also to the movie “The Purge. ” The movie does not only focus on the parody element but also shows the significance of a family sticking together through thick and thin because in this movie with all the hate, commotion and near death experience the all survived each other.
