Dan Rapkin Rhetorical Analysis on Americanization is Tough ‘Macho” by Rose Del Castillo Guibault Rose Del Castillo Guibault is a woman who is perched on a cultural precipice, the cultural implications of which give her a unique perspective on the idea of machismo and masculinity. Born in Mexico and moved to California with her father, she was able to see how each culture viewed the idea of being considered macho. Her father, according to her aunts, was a stereotypically macho man. He was loyal, hardworking, and quiet – all tenants of the Hispanic view on a man’s ‘macho-ness’. After moving to America and being exposed to their version of macho, she appeared to struggle at seeing her father as the embodiment of what a positive macho role model should be. As stylized by American movies; a macho man is tough, independent, and hypermasculine. He drinks, gambles, fools around and isn’t held accountable for his actions. One could consider this toxic masculinity. From a Hispanic perspective a macho man is hard working, loyal, manly but not cocky, and a responsible. Rose mentions that her father handled most tasks with pride, provided for his family on both sides of the border and was indulgent in parental duties. It feels that this piece is equally about how she struggled with seeing her father in a positive light because of how the American view filtered her perspective, but also, it’s meant to convince us the varying cultural implications of words can have a disparaging effect on their meaning. Her tone feels a ‘a matter of fact’ and seems to lack a strong emotional response outside of nostalgia mixed with shame. As if she’s laying out the facts for her reader and allowing them to make the choice for themselves on how the word impacts them. The article gives us just enough information to consider the effect that words have on us. It ends with a thoughtful remark on how meanings of words change over time and across different cultures and taking that into account is an important fact to consider....
