Description

Whom do you prefer, Elias or Crisostomo Ibarra? Why

I prefer Elias even though he was not the protagonist in the novel I love how his character developed in the story, without him Crisostomo Ibarra won’t be able to continue his vengeance in El Filibusterismo. Elias is probably the most unique personality in Rizal's Noli, he was created with the love and devotion of Rizal and somehow symbolic character in the novel that resembles Prophet Elijah in the bible. Prophet Elijah in the bible is a man who walked in obedience with his firm faith to God, brave, he also expected miracle, hated and confronted evil, a man who held belief when situations turned dim, faced discouragement and left a legacy. Elias signifies Filipino who wished to revolutionized the country by liberating it from Spanish tyranny. Although his education is minimal, the injustices that has happened to his family have sharpened his intellect and made him hate the social conditions around him. But unlike many who distrust but do nothing to improve their condition, he was an optimist. He trusts God and Ibarra and almost all except the civil guards and friars who punished small people in the society and he despise those unlawful acts. He mourns with them and endures a lot in the arms of Spanish ruling. He is on the edge and free spirit who suffered much from the malice and immorality of men but he does not seek indemnification or vengeance with his own hands. Instead, through his faith and putting his trust with God seeks to put into play all possible human resources to prevent any increase in the number of criminals and miserable Filipino victimized by social injustices and prejudices. Elias surpasses them by his spiritual traits, his contrasts of light and shade, his dramatic surroundings which may draw one to conclude he is not a character taken out of reality but rather an allegorical creation. What do you think was the reason Rizal wrote the original Noli Me Tangere in Spanish, the language of the colonizers? Explain your answer. Rizal wrote the original Noli Me Tangere in Spanish because it was the appropriate language for his intention to unfold the injustices of Spanish rule in the country to rebuke Spanish authorities and friars in their own language. Also, he wanted to convince the elite Filipinos or Ilustrados who have the privileged to study and learn Spanish during those time to turn their back in the opposition to fight for the socio-political reforms were clearly indicated in the novel. The Indio could have been a secondary target audience because even if they don’t read the novel perhaps there was no need to reproduce the social conditions to the Indio who knew it only too well and constantly suffered from it. It is useless to insult or someone in the language they don’t understand. Rizal confronted them word by word in Spanish because he is capable of doing so. Copies of books were redirected to churches, many were destroyed, many anti-Noli writers came into the picture. Paciano knew from the start that it will lead to revolution if Noli will be published and distributed among nations and the code he said storm was threatening Makiling. It is only waiting for time and it should not surprise those who know that this time for typhoon. The goal is reformatiom, Rizal wanted to give Filipinos equality and fair treatment, right for education, and good leadership. Rizal loved the Filipino language. While some of his works may

be in Spanish and English, one should understand why Rizal wrote it and who are his target audience. Is Noli Me Tangere anti-clerical and anti-patriotic? Defend your answer. Noli Me Tangere was considered to be one of the instruments that initiated Filipino nationalism leading to the 1896 Philippine Revolution. The novel did not only awaken sleeping Filipino awareness, but also established the grounds for aspiring to independence. Noli Me Tangere somehow an anti-clerical piece of Rizal but not anti-patriotic. Based on the internet, anti-clerical means opposing to the power or influence of the clergy, especially in politics. Rizal was greatly opposed to the friars or religious authority as well as Spanish colonizers who took advantage the power they had during the Spanish regime. He wants freedom from the hands of foreign invaders and rebuke materialism and corruption. The novel portrays many deeply religious characters, such as Elías, positively. Instead of criticizing Christianity or religion as a whole, Noli Me Tangere criticizes villainous characters like Padre Damaso and Padre Salvi who represent those Spanish friars who were highly respected during those times but hiding their true colors which is to deceive other people and hidden lust towards Filipinas. His intention was to reveal the injustices during Spanish regime in the country, from the title Noli Me Tangere which means Touch Me Not or The Social Cancer engulfed the society that reveals how other Filipinos bowed to Spaniards just for their own sake and buried their own tribe. But Noli Me Tangere also reveals family devotion, purity and faithfulness and patriotism and self-sacrifice through his other characters....
