Laura Pacelli Professor Starke Superhero Literature EN 222 13 November 2018 . Shadow’s dreams allow for insight on his journey. In these chapters, he learns many things and questions many actions through his dreams. In chapter 6, Shadow fell asleep with the Liberty coin in his hand and dreams that he is 15 again, watching his mother die. The silver coin, still cold as a sign of its magical nature and relationship to the night, is also able to watch over Shadow’s dreams, helping him escape pain there as well for waking him up from the bad dream of his mother dying. Mad Sweeney talking about the gold coin to Shadow and Mr. Wednesday says, "I did it like he said. I did it all like he said, but I gave you the wrong coin. It wasn't meant to be that coin. That's for royalty. You see? I shouldn't even have been able to take it. That's the coin you'd give to the King of America himself…"You did it like who said, Sweeney?" "Grimnir. The dude you call Wednesday. You know who he is? Who he really is? (Gaiman 293). This quote shows the rest of the coin. He also dreamed later in chapter 7 that the Buffalo Man, asked why Shadow is still working for Wednesday. This makes shadow question why he is helping Mr. Wednesday, but he goes back to the conclusion that he wants to stay loyal to him and the promises he has made....
