Course Description This course is an introductory basic drawing class. You will be familiarizing yourself with the tools and techniques for beginning freehand drawing. Perspective, still life and landscape are some basic beginning skills we will be covering as well as drawing from observation and developing hand eye function as it pertains to the general discipline of drawing. The Sketchbook Your sketchbook will be checked every class. It is of the upmost importance to keep a running visual journal. Carry it with you everywhere while you are enrolled in this class. Because you will be handling this book often, it should be the hardbound version. You should always be working in your book.

Visual Resource Center Aside from classroom time there will be homework. Part of that homework will be done in the Visual Resource Center or (VRC). You will be required to commit to two hours of VRC time per week of class. Further VRC assignments will be discussed in class. Critiques Critiques are equivalent to the types of written exams you would find in most other areas of study. To artists, a critique is our way of gaining feedback, insight on our progress, discussing successes and failures of assignments and projects and learning from mistakes. Critiques will be held on the due date of the project or when the professor deems necessary. Attendance to critiques is mandatory and participation is highly recommended. After critique, projects will be collected, graded and returned. Resources The instructor, the book, the recommended reading and the VRC will be your main resources to assist you in this class. I will be available to students during regular, posted hours. Students should not hesitate to come to me to discuss any aspect of the course including academic progress. Often, I am able to recommend strategies that will significantly improve your performance. Since class time is devoted to group instruction, after class is the best time for you to sit down and discuss any issues with me. Evaluation 25% Classroom participation, attitude, critique and discussion 25% Project and time management and VRC research 25% Sketchbook 25% Final Project outcome and overall growth 100% Note on Attendance Good attendance and punctuality is mandatory to fulfill requirements for class participation and project management. In order to fulfill requirements for class participation you must comply with the following: Compliance with the MDC Student Code of Conduct is required. If you are out for more than three days, it will have an adverse effect on your project management grade. All make-up work must be accompanied by a note or other documentation and completed in a timely manner. Tardiness and early departure beyond five minutes of class starting time will result in a lowered participation grade.

Class Conduct This is a studio course. Students are expected to be punctual and attentive during lectures or demonstrations. Late students are asked to enter the classroom quietly and not to interrupt the instructor while he is in a presentation. Please note, pursuant to the Students Rights and Responsibilities Code, the Instructor has a right to remove a student from the classroom for distracting or disruptive behavior, such as: - Talking during lectures or presentations - Working on homework for other classes - Sleeping or putting your head on the desk - Other distracting behaviors, etc. - Repeated cellphone ringing Such occurrences will incur an absence for that class day and conditions being applied for the student’s return to class. If the problem persists, the student will not be permitted to class until he/she has met with the Dean of Students. Withdrawals and Incomplete Grades Consult the Miami Dade College Catalog or the Registrar’s Office for exact course of action and time periods to formally withdraw from this course. It is not the responsibility of the instructor to withdraw or assign an incomplete grade. If the student does not attend class for three or more concurrent class meetings, and does not contact the department or the instructor and his/her name appears on the final grade roster at the end of the semester, the final grade will be “F”.
