Forward Welcome to SAE Aero Design 2021! 1986 was the first year of the ‘Radio Controlled Cargo Aircraft Competition’ that would later become SAE Aero Design. That makes this the 35th anniversary of the competition! Our mission is to provide students with real-world engineering experience through aircraft design challenges. This year we all face additional challenges from the global COVID-19 pandemic. The larger SAE student competition community are working together to develop an operational plan that will maintain our mission while accounting for participant’s health and complying with local laws and best practices. As we check and adjust our operations, we ask for your understanding and flexibility. We will approach this year’s competition season by separating registration into a virtual static event, for reports and presentations, and later dynamic events for the flyoff. You must register and participate in the virtual static events to qualify for the in-person dynamic event. Our goal is to provide a meaningful virtual-based competition experience for all teams and do our best to support a safe flyoff for teams who will be able to participate. More details will be announced with additional documents as they are finalized. Our goal for this year’s changes to the Micro class is to promote trade studies on a smaller sized aircraft that will challenge teams to explore different design space through rapid and frequent design iteration. The mission for 2021 is modeled on package delivery. Teams are required to carry boxes and static cargo. The aircraft will have to take off from a raised platform and sprint to the first turn of the flight course. Teams will need to develop an aircraft that successfully balances weight, thrust, payload, and drag. Regular class continues with the same mission from 2019-2020: a bush plane to deliver outsized spherical cargo as well as regular boxed cargo, while using short runways. The tradeoff between the two payloads and their follow-on impact to performance provides a wide range of challenges and potential solutions. Advanced class continues with the 2018-2020 theme of colonizing a planet by delivering “colonists”, “supplies”, and “habitats”. “The “colonists” are delivered to a designated zone using a small autonomous glider, carried by the primary aircraft and released in a designated area. The primary aircraft also delivers the “habitats” and “supplies”. The Rules Committee is looking forward to the evolution of the competition that this year will bring. Each year we review your feedback from the post-event surveys, forums, and in-person comments to guide our decision making, especially now. Please read these rules carefully.
