Laser is an acronym which stands for a physical phenomenon which humans sometimes perceive as a certain form of light. Laser light, however, can do a lot more than appeal to the eye. In fact, its integration in technology has redefined crucial aspects of our lives, resulting in remarkable advances in a wide range of areas like manufacturing, defense, healthcare, and many others. In my opinion, lasers have been the most important scientific discovery of the last century. Laser technologies have revolutionized manufacturing through micro- precision applications. Lasers, as a tool, cut cleaner, don’t put excess strain on materials while cutting them and, thus, also allow for more cuts on smaller surfaces. My mobile phone’s tiny loudspeaker is a wonderful example of that: No other tool could have perforated this small metal plate with such intensity and yet produced such highly functional and visually appealing quality. Laser technologies also assist our armed forces in their operations, and, by the same token, improve our physical safety. The use of lasers provides the military with high-precision instruments and non-invasive methods in order to surveil or to hit targets. Accordingly, soldiers can stay out of harm’s way as much as possible, mistakes are kept to a minimum, situations won’t escalate, and civilian casualties can also be avoided. Laser drones are one example which features these advantages, and they have become an essential tool in the fight against terrorism. However, one of the most important changes lasers have brought about are the ones we can feel in person: Laser technologies have provided us with medical procedures which increase patient safety, allow for quicker healing, and, as a result, are also very cost-effective. Lasers bring their precision also to medical procedures: Cleaner, more precise cuts with smaller tools cause less scarring and, in turn, allow for quicker healing and less medical attention afterwards. Modern eye surgery with its amazing potential would simply not be possible without laser technology. In sum, the discovery of lasers and their application in technology has affected our daily lives immensely. From the items we use in our free time to the tools we use at work, lasers have created a great number of them or constitute an integral part of their functionality. The application of lasers offers convincing advantages and countless possibilities, and I am confident every single one of us will be positively affected by them in the very near future, knowingly or unknowingly....
