Description

Midterm 1: Sample Mid-Term Questions 1. What would you say is the primary lesson to be learned from the story of Clever Hans? A more important question, I think, is whether we are still, to this day, liable to the sorts of communications described in that story or whether things have changed so much that we are not free of that sort of communication. What do you think? Is the Clever Hans tale relevant for us today?

2. We are all learning to learn online; that is, we are all having to become experts at remote education whether it is Canvas, Microsoft Teams, or Zoom. And because these platforms are designed to allow us to communicate, I want to ask how you see this new experience in relation to any of the communication theories we have discussed this term so far. Would McLuhan say that Canvas is hot or cool? What might Rodriguez say? You can choose whatever communication theory or theorist you prefer, but you must relate his or her ideas directly to the experience of online communication. Personal examples and experiences or reactions are welcome.

3. Amardo Rodriguez suggests an important point regarding communication is the difference between intent and impact. What is he getting at with this distinction? Provide examples of your own in your answer.

4. “Embedded in every tool is an ideological bias, a predisposition to construct the world as one thing rather than another, to value one thing over another, to amplify one sense or skill or attitude more loudly than another.” So claims Neil Postman in the essay The Judgment of Thamus. What do you think is the main point that Postman is making here? Please give at least one good example to illustrate your answer....
