SCHOOL NURSE VISIT ASSIGNMENT

1. Identify the role of the school nurse. (Include collaboration, referral, delegation). (10 points) The school nurse has a crucial role in the seamless provision of comprehensive health services to children and youth. Increasing numbers of students enter schools with chronic health conditions that require management during the school day. The school nurse in serving as a team member in providing preventive services, early identification of problems, interventions, and referrals to foster health and educational success. To optimally care for children, preparation, ongoing education, and appropriate staffing levels of school nurses are important factors for success. 2. Discuss screening tests performed by the school nurse. (10 points) Each year, the School Nurse screens every student. This screening includes height, weight and blood pressure. Vision screenings are performed every other year, hearing is performed from pre-school through grade three and then in grade seven. If a student has difficulty with the initial screening, the student will be re-evaluated and, if there is a problem after the second screening, a referral will be sent home requesting an examination and evaluation by your physician. Scoliosis screening is performed on students in grades 5 and 7. 3. Describe some of the health problems encountered by the school nurse, focused assessment, and interventions performed. (brief focus assessment- do not include any patient identifying information) (10 points) ● Fever, if the temperature is higher than 99F - notify parent's and send the child home; ● Diabetes, the nurse give scheduled medication if there is a form obtained provided by the parents or a physician at the beginning of the school year; ● Food Allergy, if severe, there are epi-pens in stock and would call 911 and parent; ● Seizures- Lay the child on their side and prevent injury as well as time the seizure and call the ● parent as well as 911 if it is continuous. ● Strep throat, send the child home if they are in pain and develop a fever. 4. Discuss the appropriate age level activities expected for the age group that you observed (10 points)

I observed preschoolers age group (3 to 5 years old): playing ball, putting puzzles together, riding tricycles, role-playing, hand puppets, painting, reading books, skating, musical toys. 6. Identify health teaching conducted by the school nurse. (10 points) The school nurse employs primary prevention by providing health education that promotes physical and mental health and informs healthcare decisions, prevents disease, and enhances school performance. Addressing such topics as healthy lifestyles, risk‐reducing behaviors, developmental needs, activities of daily living, and preventive self‐care, and the school nurse uses teaching methods that are appropriate to the student’s developmental level, learning needs, readiness, and ability to learn. 7. Describe the impact of health problems on learning in the school setting (5 points There are different health problems but most of them are addressing with the children learning. Some examples are ADHD, in which kids have a difficult time focusing and some kids are not on medication because the parents are in denial. Another example is Autism where, depending on the level, the kids aren’t able to socialize much and don’t work well with others, and do not learn at the same pace. 8. Identify the role of the school team in maintenance of adequate nutrition. (Collaboration) (5 points) The school is in charge of making sure they provide nutritious meals for the children. At this specific district they even have a program called Brighter Bites which provides a box of food, specifically fruits and veggies free for the parents or guardians of the students that want or need it. 9. Identify facilities and services available for the education of children with developmental or cognitive disability. (10 points) SLC/ Structured Learning Center: ● Speech-language and audiology services. ● Interpreting services. ● Psychological services. ● Occupational and physical therapy. ● Recreation, including therapeutic recreation. ● Early identification and evaluation of disabilities in children.

10. Identify measures employed for prevention and control of communicable diseases and ensure student safety. (10 points) The nurse has a very large chart for all communicable diseases and how to handle them posted in her clinic. The most common ones are handled by promoting good hand hygiene, making sure students are vaccinated before enrolling, as well as if it is something contagious staying home until they receive their pediatrician’s note to return to school. 11.
