Description

ScientificDrawingofAnimalandPlantCells  Background Itisextremelyimportantforstudentstolearnhowtovisuallyrepresenttheirfindings throughtheuseofscientificdrawings.Inmostsituations,microscopesdonothavethe capabilitytorecordandstoreimages(i.e.micrographs)ofmicroscopicspecimens.Assuch, scientistsarerequiredtorapidlyhand‐drawimagesinordertorecordinformationaboutthe specimensthattheyareinspectingunderamicroscope. 

Instructions Inthissubjectyouwillneedtodrawtwodiagramsofeukaryotecells.Thefirstdrawingwill beofananimalcell(pre‐labforprac3)andthesecondwillbeaplantcell(pre‐labforprac 6).Thesedrawingsneedtoberepresentedasmapdiagramsofwhatyouwouldseeifthe cellwasobservedthroughthehighpowerlensofthemicroscope.Thereisamicrograph imageonmoodletorepresentwhatyouwouldseeonthemicroscope–youneedtodrawa mapdiagramtorepresentthismicrograph.  Chapter30inPracticalSkillsinBiologyprovidesusefulinformationonhowtocomplete high‐powereddiagrams.Youdonotneedtobeanartisttodrawbiologicaldiagrams,but youdoneedtobeabletocarefullyobserveyourspecimenandmakeaccuraterecordsof thoseobservations.Youcanrefertoinformationinyourtextbooksandpracmaterialto identifyandlabelthevariousorganellesthatyoucanobserveinthetwomicrographs.An exampleofahigh‐powereddiagramofaparameciumcellisshownbelow.Thisimagehas beenclearlydrawnanddisplayseachofthekeyorganellesthatcanbeobservedinthecell. However,thediagramlacksascalebar. Makesurethatyoudrawallthestructuresthatyousee.Itisclearthattheanimalcell containstenormoremitochondria.Thus,donotdrawjustoneortwomitochondria.Draw asmanythatyoucanseeintheirrelativelocationsinthecell. Donotdraworlabelorganellesthatyoucannotseeinthemicrograph.Wearenottryingto trickyou!Ifyoucan'tseeastructure,donotdrawit.Allyousimplyneedtodoisdrawthe organellesthatyoucanseeandlabelthose.Intheanimalcell,forinstance,youonlyneedto labelsixstructures(thesixlabelsarealreadyprovidedforyou!). Donotshadeyourdrawings.Organellesandkeystructures(e.g.cellmembranes)shouldbe clearlydrawnwithcontinuouslineswithoutcolourorshading.Donotworryifyour drawingslookboring‐theyarenotmeanttobecolourfulartworks!Theyaresimply supposedtobeclear,unblemishedandunclutteredrecordsofamicroscopeimage.
