Discuss 4. In my opinion, the reason that a lot of media outlets devote their time to pumping out murder mysteries, serial killer thrillers, and murder spree series is due to two things. The first is being that it rakes in a LOT of revenue for said outlets. Looking at some statistics done by Statista.com, they compiled data from back in 1995 to 2019 of all of the money made in different box office genres in the U.S. It doesn’t surprise me that with serial killer movies, I would classify them under thriller/horror/action. Due to the fact that movies can bleed over into different genres. Thrillers generated roughly 19 billion, horror raked in around 11 billion, and action stole the show out of these three categories with a whopping 46 billion dollars. Breaking down the action genre alone, that gives an annual yield of roughly 2 billion a year. So, it would be safe to assume that it’s a good market for production. The second reason being that people are interested in the darker things in life. Take Criminal Minds for a moment, there is a reason that they have 12 seasons of that show. People enjoy the unconventional, twisted things that go against society because it gives them a sense of both horror and curiosity as to what can drive a person to do such a thing. Going through the text, it is mentioned that Branson (2011) discusses that serial killers who are of a Caucasian background are given an “iconic status” within our culture and what we consider to be popular. It is also said that the media tends to showcase white serial killers and neglect black serial killers from a media standpoint as well. With that, it could be plausible that without direct media coverage, “they hone their craft” so to speak and fly under the radar. To answer this question, I’d divert back to a biological standpoint as men have higher testosterone levels and therefore have more aggressive tendencies. Even looking at a peer reviewed article on different ethnicities and testosterone levels in both lives of solidarity and in a relationship differ as Caucasian men have higher testosterone levels in a relationship, whereas their African American counterparts lack in a relationship, they carry higher levels when single. Sadly, a limitation of this study was that they did not include women in their data as that would have been something to suggest a biological component into aggressive female African American serial killers. (Maestripieri, D., et al.) It could be speculated that the reason for the rise of male African American killers could be to “make themselves known”. As said before, Caucasian serial killers are seen as an iconic status, as well as “the stereotypical serial killer”. So, by stirring the pot, some may want that same recognition. The book states that: “fluctuations in the stability of the U.S. economy [has] a profound effect on the psychological well-being of some individuals.” (Pg. 283. Hickey, 2016). Looking at poverty rates from both 2004 and 2014, as how the text gives its percentages of team offenders on pages 282 and 283, in ’14 we see that out of the Caucasian non-Hispanic race that only 9% of the total population was considered to be impoverished. Yet if you look at the African American percentage, you’ll see that it jumps to 24%. The same thing can be seen in 2004. African Americans still sit at around the 24% and Caucasian non-Hispanics sit at around 8.7%. Looking at this data and then seeing what Hickey says in regards to psychological issues in conjunction

with SES, one could interpret the data to say that those with the higher poverty level are more unstable, mentally speaking, and therefore there could be somewhat of a gap between planning out murders, irrationality, impulsivity, and other such factors that would end up with the culprits being caught. Am I surprised? Not at all really. Seeing as how the majority of teams of male/females have the male as the dominator, they easily exert their authority through whatever means necessary as the submissive becomes attached to their dominate partner. Of course, it’s worth mentioning that hybristophiles easily fall into the category of a dom/sub relationship and that when one is infatuated over the other, they will do whatever they can to please them. As I previously stated in regards to hybristophiles, these people are infatuated with violent criminals. Please keep in mind that there is a big distinction between love and infatuation. In Compton’s case, her own fetish lead to her getting arrested after following Bianchi’s orders. Of course, her attraction to dangerous men is what is able to please her. Therefore, it is only natural that after she loses contact with one man who met her needs, she sought out another. My Original Q. is this: It is mentioned that some men are dominated in teams by their women partner. Do you believe that this is a due to a sexual desire by both parties, a psychological issue from childhood trauma on the man’s part via form of abuse, or is it just personal preference in regards to power dynamics?
