Description of Skill Blood is infused into the recipient’s body via IV catheter.
Indications Blood transfusions are indicated in clients who have hypovolemia due to hemorrhage, anemia or another disease process.
Outcomes/Evaluation Vital signs, assess/document how pt tolerates transfusion. Draw labs to assess final results of transfusion.
Potential Complications Pain, anxiety, hematuria, fever, headache, ananphylaxis

CONSIDERATIONS
Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post) Blood should be initiated or returned within 30 minutes of leaving the blood bank. Two licensed personel must verify blood product. Vitals should be taken before administration, in the 1st 15 minutes and every 15 minutes after administration.
Client Education Advise the patient that blood type and crossmatch will be done before the proceedure. Teach the client about the proceedure. Urge the pt to tell a nurse immediately if they experience fever, shortness of breath, chills, itching, chest or back pain.
Nursing Interventions Warm blood at room temperature before transfusion to prevent chills. Do not mix meds and blood to prevent adverse reactions. Observe for potential complications, notify physician if any arise.
