Small Group Discussion Questions for SW 325: Religion, Tolerance, Social Justice, & your Campus: You know what to do – who was here today? *you can fill this out in paper copy and return to Dr. L. or Tessy or you can use the online version and email it to Tessy [email protected] when your group finishes!

Your readings for the past few classes have all centered on religion – a lot of this reading has centered on intolerance and a lack of understanding of different faiths. What does it mean to be an ALLY -- we hear that word a lot in the study of social justice and inclusion, but we haven’t really examined what we mean by that… here’s a quick discussion of what an ally is…

As college students, you have a unique opportunity to consider how to create change on your own campus. Consider the readings and your own experiences as you answer the following questions: 1) If you’re comfortable, share with your group your own religious affiliation/belief tradition – as a group, are you diverse? In what ways? In what ways are you similar? Does your small group look like UK’s campus in general?

2) Do you find UK’s campus to be an easy place to identify with your own faith/spirituality in group? In what ways? Or, is it a challenge to find opportunities to identify with people who share your beliefs?

3) Have you experienced negativity on campus – in dorms, in the classroom, at events, etc. – as it relates to your religion or spiritual beliefs?

4) What opportunities exist on this campus for students to be around students who share religious beliefs? (clubs, groups, etc. – you may have to look these up!) – for what faiths do these groups exist?

5) What opportunities exist on this campus for students to engage in dialogue with people of different religious beliefs? (Interfaith dialogue?)

6) What is one thing that you could do – as students – to enhance understanding and tolerance for religious difference on this campus? Dream big, maybe we’ll put one of these ideas into action…...
