Description

SOC-100 Short-Answer Quiz 4 Complete the quiz in a Word document. This is an open book quiz. The answer to each question must be 100-125 words. Topic 4 1. How do property, power, and prestige affect your personal social class? According to Marx’s conflict perspective in what social class do you belong and why? I personally believe that property, power, and prestige affect your personal social class because within all of those things it basically just says what you have been able to do with your life. Many people that have worked hard throughout their life typically own property or are working towards paying off their homes due to a loan they had to take out. I personally have power in my own home because I have children that I currently have to manage every single day. I am in control of all of our money that we have due to the fact that I am the only one that has any income coming into our home right now so I am the sole person who is responsible for all of our bills and making sure everything gets paid on time.

2. From your perspective, what are the current shifts in global stratification? How does this affect the economic and political power of the United States? I believe the answer to this would be technology. Technology plays a major role in today’s society no matter where you go around the world. Throughout the world all the time there is new devices coming out that involve more technological aspects then the last one did. Look at our current cell phones for example. If you think of when our parents were first able to get a cell phone when they first came out, they were huge and could only be used to call people. Today’s society of cell phones you can call, text, email. Video chat and many other things. I personally think that with how technology keeps evolving throughout history right now that within time just like bits and pieces today, there are many ways that the government can track every single thing you are doing just by the push of a button according to your cell phone. Your GPS tracking systems are letting someone around the world know where you or your phone is at all times. Also, the internet can keep track of many different things such as emails that have been erased or text messages that have also been erased. Technology is constantly changing and I think that it can only help the world for the better.

3. In the current economic situation in the United States what do you project will happen to social mobility and the American Dream?

There has been many people around the world that have fought there way to be able to come into the United States, but shortly after coming over here they have noticed that a lot of the troubles they went through in order to get themselves and their families over here were not worth it in the long run. So many immigrants have come over into the United States that they have taken most of our jobs so the people that have lived here there entire lives are no longer able to find work in order to provide for their families.

4. Describe the Horatio Alger myth. Based on your own experience discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the myth for both men and women. I am not really sure on this one. From what I have understood on the different places I have looked this up even including the readings from this weeks chapters, was it was a myth on people being able to work hard for things and become “self-made”. Even in today’s society you still see men and women not being treated the same. Even though women have fought for many of years to gain most of the rights that we do currently have things still are not where they should be. You could see a woman working for your local city getting paid a lower amount for a man to work that exact same job doing the exact same thing making twice the amount of money....
