Health promotion and education: principles and practices. SOCIAL JUSTICE PRINCIPLES DEFINITION: Social Justice within this context means to be able to critically examine the consistency, fairness and appropriateness of health outcomes for individuals, groups and communities.

KEY CHARACTERISTICS/COMPONENTS: There are three interrelated principles that form the social justice framework in Health Education. Interrelated Principles of:  Diversity  Equity  Supportive Environments When selecting a health issue these principles establish the authenticity of that issue as they direct attention to inequities in health status and access to health resources and help determine solutions.

LINK TO ACARA HPE NATIONAL CURRICULUM: 1. How does this principle contribute to the “Nature of the HPE learning area” (see Draft Shape Document) Social Justice Principals underpin this document. Of particular relevance is pg. 5 “Inclusive practices in Health and Physical Education.” This section discusses the importance of allowing for inclusive teaching practices that account for the strengths and abilities of all students and understand and respect diversity; flexibility to support teachers in planning programs that build on each student’s strengths and abilities. In addition it aims to provide a platform for students to challenge stereotypes based on difference and develop inclusive attitudes, beliefs and behaviours, all of which are consistent with a socially critical perspective. 2. 2 content descriptors in the full ACARA Draft document that are shaped by this principle. 4.2 Recognise instances of discrimination, harassment and bullying based on a person’s physical or intellectual abilities, gender, sexuality, race or religion and propose actions to counteract these behaviours. 4.11 Investigate and reflect on how strategies for valuing diversity can positively influence the wellbeing of the school community and its environment....
