Description

Shannon McHugh SOWK 3000 Social Work Interview Summary This interview was given to a 33-year-old “angry client” named Rachel. She is angry because her husband is forcing her to see a social work facility for her drinking problem, which she does not believe she has. The interviewee was asked difficult questions about why her husband feels she is needing to see a social worker and about her life growing up. After reviewing the video of the interview, there are many positive and negative interviewer skills shown. The interviewer displayed good skills of reflection and paraphrasing. It was also made clear what boundaries were set in place when the interviewer stated confidentiality. The interviewee was also very detached and standoffish because of her anger towards the situation, however the interviewer did a good job of staying calm and not taking the behavior personally. Lastly, the interviewer did a decent job of delivering the message in an appropriate way. After reviewing the video, there are many different aspects the interviewer can improve on such as better body language and a more clear and audible voice. Also, the scenario given was very broad, so it was difficult to ask specific questions in the interview. The interviewee should have expressed more anger such as an outburst. If the interviewee had an outburst, the social worker could respond by saying, “as a social worker I will always use respectful communication and expect the same from you”. The social worker could also respond by asking the interviewee to remain calm and explain you are there to help. There needed to be more strategies used which were taught in class. Overall, the interview went fairly smoothly considering it was the first social worker interview, however there is much room for improvement....
