Guide to Viewing the Online Timetable for Students Step 1: To access your timetable, please go to the University website (https://sws.city.ac.uk/tt1718/default.aspx) or you the Search Website function in the information bar at the top right of the City student intranet site (as shown below) or http://www.city.ac.uk/current-students:

Please note the timetable is not available via Moodle.

Step 2: The Timetable page will look like this screenshot below, click on Programmes:

Step 3: Searching by Programme of Study

You can search by your programme: We would recommend you make a record of your timetable on a weekly basis as changes do occur. Select “This Week”

Step 4: Timetable viewing formats You can view your timetable in several formats, here are some of the most friendly user options:

Options 1: This is called the Grid Timetable

Pros:   Cons  

Colour and easy to read It gives you all the information you need in a simpler format

You can only fit one day on a printed A4 size paper Hint: It shows all the electives, when you are in year 2 and 3, therefore you would have to make note of the autumn or spring term electives you have chosen.

Options 2: This is called Programme by week Pros:  Very detailed & pretty much as all has all the information you need  You can print a full week timetable on one A4 size paper Cons   

Not very pretty It can be quite confusing if you are not familiar with the timetable setup.

Hint: You can find out what week your lecture or tutorial is running here. Hint: You have to pay a very close attention to the Week numbers as some lectures or seminars only run for a short period. Hint: This timetable will show all the electives, therefore you would have to make note of the autumn or spring term electives you have chose

Options 3: This view is by checking the whole of the Autumn term (w/c 26 Sept – w/c 5 by day

th

Dec) and viewing by Monday – Friday, you can also view day

Pros:  Cons   

It has all the information you need for term 1 shown by hour.

It can be VERY confusing due to information overload, and I would advise you to only use this format once you have an in-depth knowledge of the timetable setup. Hard to read May not have the most up-to-date information if printed out at the beginning of term as the timetables is subject to changes, so please check frequently for any alterations.

Hint: If you decide to use this format, please make sure you print an updated copy every week and if possible also check the online web timetable on a daily basis for any last minute alterations. Hint: This timetable will show all the electives, therefore you would have to make note of the autumn or spring term electives you have chosen. Hint: You will need to contact your programme administrator or check Moodle to find out which tutorial/lab you have been assigned to if more than one exists per module.

Step 5: Searching by Module If you know the code of a module you can search the timetable for a specific module:

On the Module Timetable in the section titled ‘Department’ UG Programme (Cass Business School)

After that you can select the module(s) by searching in the section titled ‘Modules’

After choosing the days / week teaching pattern here is an example of what your timetable may look like:

Hint: For modules with a large number of students you will be split into tutorial groups.

F.A.Qs What are tutorial groups? Tutorial groups are small seminar classes where a student has more direct interaction with the academic. It is also used to further analyse what has been discussed at the lecture. How are the groups formed? The course officer randomly selects a number of students for a group based on the total number of students taking the course. Please note that students are not allowed to switch group without formal approval from the course officer or the module leader. We would only allow students to swap groups if they have extenuating reasons. What are lectures? An educational talk to a large number of students enrolled to a particular module. Lectures classes can accommodate up to 80 or more students. What are streams? Occasionally we have modules with a large amount of students, to prevent overcrowding in lecture and tutorial classes students are randomly divided into 2 streams. Please note that students are not allowed to switch streams without formal approval from the course officer or the module leader. More information regarding your streams will be available on the module page on Moodle at the beginning of week 1 of the autumn term.

An example is one of your autumn term core module FR1101 Finance & Investment

Stream 1 – This stream is only for students on the BIF degree (Banking and International Finance) Stream 2 – This stream is only for students on the IFRM degree (Investment and Financial Risk Management)

Stream 1 Lectures: only for those on the BIF & FIN degree

Stream 2 Lectures – only for those on the IFRM degree You will also be assigned tutorials in start in week 2 of teaching for modules requiring them, please see an example of this above for FR1101 module on Monday. Differences between groups and streams: Groups and streams are a small number of students in a seminar class, some academic terms prefer the term group, while some use the term streams. Please note your stream number is not the same as your group number. Hint: At the start of week 1 you will be allocated into your specific tutorial group and Core module stream for each subjects (if required). Please keep a note of this information, however if you need a refresher this information will be available on the module page on Moodle. Hint: Streams are for Core modules and there are ONLY TWO streams. This will most likely be split alphabetically.
