Description

University of Maryland Global Campus STAT200 - Assignment #1: Descriptive Statistics Data Analysis Plan

Identifying Information Student (Full Name): Williams, Tara Class: STAT 200 7375 Instructor: Prof. Sandoval Date: 3/29/2021 Scenario: The sample data has been gathered from 30households across from the US Department of Labor’s 2016 Consumer Expenditure Survey. The following variables, Income, Food, Age, Family Size and Transport have been chosen to assist with the data tables included.

Table 1. Variables Selected for the Analysis Variable Name in the Data Set

Description (See the data dictionary for describing the variables.)

Type of Variable (Qualitative or Quantitative)

Variable 1: “Income”

Annual household income in USD.

Quantitative

Variable 2: Food

Total Amount of Expenditure on Food

Quantitative

Variable 3: Age Head of Household

Age of Household

Quantitative

Variable 4: Family Size

Total Number of People in Family

Quantitative

Variable 5: Transport

Total Amount of Annual Expenditure on Transportation

Quantitative

Reason(s) for Selecting the Variables and Expected Outcome(s): 1. Variable 1: Income – To show the annual household income. 2. Variable 2: Food – To show annual amount expended on food. 3. Variable 3: Age - To show age of household. 4. Variable 4: Family Size - To show the different family sizes. 5. Variable 5: Transport – To show annual transportation cost. Proposed Data Analysis: Measures of Central Tendency and Dispersion Table 2. Numerical Summaries of the Selected Variables Variable Name Variable 1: “Income”

Measures of Central Tendency and Dispersion ● ●

Median Sample Standard Deviation

Rationale for Why Appropriate

I am using median for two reasons: 1. If there are any outliers or the data is not normally distributed, the median is the best measure of central tendency. 2. The variable is quantitative. I am using sample standard deviation for three reasons: 1. The data is a sample from a larger data set. 2. It is the most commonly used measure of dispersion. 3. The variable is quantitative.

Variable 2: Food

● ●

Sample Standard Deviation Median

I am using median for two reasons: 1. Median is the most frequently used measure of tendency. 2. The variable is quantitative. I am using standard deviation for two reasons: 1. Standard deviation shows the distribution of data in a population. 2. The variable is quantitative.

Variable 3: Age

● ●

Mean Sample Standard Deviation

I am using mean for three reasons: 1. Mean due to less outliers in the data. 2. The variable is quantitative. 3. The data will represent the average age. I am using standard deviation for two reasons: 1. The variable is quantitative. 2. The data is concentrated around the mean.

Variable 4:

Median

I am using median for two reasons: STAT200: Assignment #1 - Descriptive Statistics Analysis Plan - Template Page 2 of 3

Family Size

Sample Standard Deviation

1. Segment the data into equal groups for specific values. 2. To describe the data distribution of variables. I am using standard deviation for two reasons: 1.The variable is quantitative. 2. Standard deviation shows the distribution of data.

Variable 5: Transport

● ●

Median Sample Standard Deviation

I am using median for two reasons: 1.The data is quantitative. 2. Median is the best measure of central tendency. I am using standard deviation for 1.It is the most commonly used measure of dispersion. 2. The data is quantitative.

Graphs and/or Tables Table 3. Type of Graphs and/or Tables for Selected Variables Variable Name

Graph and/or Table

Rationale for why Appropriate?

Variable 1: “Income”

Graph: Histogram

A histogram is one of the best plots available to visually depict the distribution of quantitative level data.

Variable 2: Food

Graph: Line Graph

A line graph will visually depict the overall changes in the annual food expenditures.

Variable 3: Age

Graph: Bar Graph

A bar graph will visually depict a wide range of data in different age categories.

Variable 4: Family Size

Graph: Pie Chart

A pie chart will visually depict the family size data divided into segments to represent values.

Variable 5: Transport

Graph: Bar Graph

A bar graph will visually depict the annual transport cost of the smaller changes in data.
