Suspicion of Cheating If I suspect you of cheating on an exam or quiz, such as by you having notes open or copying other student’s solutions, you will automatically lose 20% of your grade on your exam or quiz (not 20% of the quiz you cheated on, but 20% of the aggregate grade apportioned to quizzes).

I. Getting Started: This course requires the purchase of textbook along with MyStatlab and the online homework manager. Below are the student instructions:

II. Computer Registration: The exams are on computer in the computer labs. As such, before the midterm you need to have a baruch password and login so you can use the computers in the computer lab. In addition, you must have registered for the course by said date. If you do not, you will be given a zero on your midterm.

III. Grading:* 1) Midterm 30%; 2). Final exam 30%; 3) Homework 15%; 4) Attendance 5%. 5) Quizzes 20% *Notwithstanding anything to the contrary, grading is subject to the grading curve set by the department. Last semester, the parameters set by the department were that no more than 33% of the class could receive A and A-s. As such, some students who had an A average average received a B+ because they were not in the top 33 percentile. Exams: Midterm and Final The tests questions will be drawn from the homework questions and supplemental homework questions. Successful mastery of the homework questions will likely result in strong performance on the exams. Please be advised that both the midterm and final will be taken on computer (like the homeworks). You will be permitted an 8.5x11 cheat sheet and a non-cell phone calculator. The exams will be taken in a computer lab to be specified during the semester. The exam location will be posted on Blackboard at least 24 hours before the exam. The exam location will most likely not be in the classroom. The makeup midterm exam will be in our classroom. Getting caught cheating will result in an F in the class. In addition, if another student reports you as cheating during the exam that is not corroborated by more than one student, the minimum penalty shall be retaking the exam under closer proctoring and your original grade being disregarded. Makeup Exams and Extra Time Please be advised that with respect to the midterm, you will have the opportunity to take a make-up exam. The makeup exam will be given the following class after the original midterm. The makeup exam will be at least as hard as the original exam and likely harder. You will need to bring a laptop in the classroom and inform me in advance by email of your intention to take the makeup exam. If you are sick or away or otherwise unable to take the makeup midterm, then there will not be another opportunity to take the makeup midterm exam. If you score higher than a 95% on the make-up exam, your original midterm score will be scrubbed and your grade will be a 90 on the midterm (e.g. if your original score

was a 50 and on the makeup exam you scored a 94.9, your original score of 50 will be kept). If you require extra time on the midterm and final you must submit proof to me in advance and ask my permission in advance. If you are sick or unable to attend the midterm or final, then you must be let me know in advance via email. If you fail to do so before the exam via email, your score will be zero regardless of the severity of the illness or emergency. With respect to the midterm, if you do inform me in advance, you will be permitted to take the makeup midterm exam the following class where there shall be an automatic of deduction of 10 percentage points from your midterm (e.g. if the midterm is out of 230, 23 points shall automatically be deducted from your midterm score). Similarly, with respect to the final, a makeup final shall be given the following Sunday whereby they shall be an automatic deduction of 10 percentage points (e.g. if the final is out of 430, 43 points shall automatically be deducted from your final score). Also, please note that the makeup midterm and makeup final shall be at least as hard if not harder than the original exam. Homeworks I will assign homework after every course. I strongly strongly strongly strongly urge every student to complete the homework. For every hour of class time, you should be putting in at least the same number of hours outside of class doing homework and rewriting your notes. If students have questions, they can ask me in class or during my office hours. You will be required to pass all the homeworks except two homeworks. Each homework assignment is pass/fail. To pass a given homework you need to score at least a 70% on the homework and complete the homework before the due date. For both the homework and the exams, if you get within 10% of the correct answer you will receive full credit for your solutions. A homework deadline may not be extended. You have 2 weeks to do a given homework and the solutions sets are posted online. In addition, you are allowed 1 unexcused homeworks. All emails on any topic sent to me must include BARUCH SPRING 2020 in the subject line. If the aforementioned term is not included in the subject line the email will be ignored. Also, when you ask me a question regarding a homework question, kindly type the question for me to answer. Please do not ask me to answer, for example, HW7 part b since the numbers I see will be different than the number you see. Attendance Attendance will be taken in the first 5 minutes of class. You are permitted two absences

during the semester. Attendance will not be excused for doctor appointments, weddings or other events or late running subways. Indeed, you are permitted 2 absences for such emergencies. If you miss more than 5 or more classes you will automatically fail the class. Quizzes There will be a quizzes at the beginning of almost every class. The quizzes will be posted at least two days before the class with no solutions. To get the full 20 points, you must pass all the quizzes except 2. If you are not in attendance the pop up quiz cannot be made up. If you happen to miss 2 or 3 pop up quizzes due to attendance issues, then those quizzes cannot be made up. The pop up quizzes will test very basic material we have previously covered or are covering in class. If the answers are not legible or are unclear then no partial credit shall be given. If your name is not on the solution sheet or your name is not written legibly then you will be given a zero. A typical pop up quiz will likely have approximately 10 questions and require very short answer. A passing grade will be a 80 or above – no partial credit shall be given for any question.
