CIVL444/ENVE421/ENVE928 Civil/Environmental Engineering Design S220 Student Chartered Professional Engineer Report Purpose This assignment, as part of the capstone subject CIVL444/ENVE421/ENVE928, is developed as an introduction to the Chartered Status application process run by Engineers Australia. You are required to complete the report, following the assessment criteria, and based on your academic learning gained so far during your civil/environmental engineering degree course. Requirements To achieve ‘chartered status’ in this capstone subject, you are required to compile a comprehensive report demonstrating your attainment of the following professional learning outcomes: 1. Demonstrated ability to apply conceptual design and detailed design skills to engineering projects. 2. Ability in applying cost estimation techniques to civil/environmental engineering projects. 3. Ability to bring together different disciplines of civil/environmental engineering practice, including structural, geotechnical, hydraulic and environmental engineering in civil engineering projects. 4. A work history of considering non-technical factors in engineering design, such as safety and risk management, time management, and community engagement. 5. Evidence of effective teamwork skills in different team environments, such as consulting teams, design teams, and minor project teams. The report must contain sufficient evidence to support your claims to achievement of the above learning outcomes. Forms of evidence that will be considered may include, but are not limited to:  Design reports, both current drafts and previously graded assignments in engineering subjects.  Achievements, awards, and performance in relevant subjects in your degree course.  Assignment feedback.  Feedback from prior professional work experience.  References from colleagues and former employers.  Relevant email correspondence and meeting minutes (particularly important for teamwork skills). Assessment As this is a substantial assignment comprising 20% of the total mark for CIVL444/ENVE421/ENVE928, the main body of the report is expected to be about 4000 words

Assessment Criteria Outcome

Satisfactory (10/10 Marks) Demonstrates a clear understanding of design skills and provides sufficient evidence to support claims of competency.

Borderline (5/10 Marks) Demonstrates some understanding of design skills and provides limited evidence to support claims of competency.

Unsatisfactory (0 Marks) Demonstrates limited understanding of design skills and provides no, or inappropriate evidence to support claims of competency.

2) Ability and experience in applying cost estimation techniques to civil engineering projects

Clearly demonstrates ability in cost estimation, and provides sufficient evidence demonstrating experience in this.

Limited understanding of cost estimation, and provides little or no evidence demonstrating experience in this.

3) Experience in drawing together different disciplines of civil engineering practice, including structural, geotechnical, hydraulic and environmental engineering in civil engineering projects 4) A work history of considering nontechnical factors in engineering design, including safety and risk management, time management, and community engagement 5) Evidence of effective teamwork skills in different team environments, including consulting teams, design teams, and minor project teams

Demonstrates an understanding of how to combine different disciplines of civil engineering in design. Provides sufficient evidence of past experience that demonstrates an ability to do this.

Clearly demonstrates understanding of cost estimation, but provides limited or no evidence demonstrating ability. Demonstrates an understanding of how to combine different disciplines of civil engineering in design. Provides limited evidence of past experience that demonstrates an ability to do this.

Demonstrates an appreciation of nontechnical factors in design, and provides substantial evidence of this from past work.

Demonstrates an appreciation of nontechnical factors in design, and provides limited evidence of this from past work.

Demonstrates limited appreciation of non-technical factors in design, and provides substantial little or no evidence of this from past work.

Demonstrates experience in effective teamwork across a broad range of contexts. Provides evidence to support claims of teamwork skills.

Demonstrates experience in effective teamwork across a limited range of contexts. Provides evidence to support claims of teamwork skills.

Demonstrates experience in effective teamwork across a range of contexts. Provides little or no evidence to support claims of teamwork skills.

1) Demonstrated ability to apply conceptual design and detailed design skills to major projects

Demonstrates a limited understanding of how to combine different disciplines of civil engineering in design. Provides little or no evidence of past experience that demonstrates an ability to do this.

Compiling your report and collecting evidence Finding evidence The suggested process for identifying, collecting, and reporting evidence to demonstrate your attainment of the five learning outcomes requirements is: i.

Summarise your understanding of the requirements

ii.

What activities have you done that could demonstrate these?

iii.

What evidence would you need to convince someone else that you have carried out these activities successfully?

iv.

Now, what evidence do you have access to, and what evidence can you source?

v.

Plan how you will argue that you have attained the learning requirements based on the evidence you have available: What will you argue? What are the key points you want to make?

vi.

Write it up! Make sure you reference and annotate your sources of evidence effectively to make sure the assessor can find it easily. Post-it notes, highlighting, and references to page numbers or section headings within your sources of evidence is appropriate.

Suggested format for your report To make things simpler, we suggest you use the following format for your report: Title page Executive summary, outlining the key points (approx 300 words) Contents Introduction outlining the purpose of the report and it’s layout (approx 200 words) Professional learning outcome 1  Up to 600 words outlining how you have met this requirement. This should refer the reader to the appropriate sources of evidence in the appendix of the report. One source of evidence may be used for more than one learning outcome. Professional learning outcome 2  Up to 600 words outlining how you have met this requirement. This should refer the reader to the appropriate sources of evidence in the appendix of the report. One source of evidence may be used for more than one learning outcome. Professional learning outcome 3  Up to 600 words outlining how you have met this requirement.
