Psych 203 Study Tips These are tips from former students. I hope this helps calm any nerves you have about the upcoming test or gives you ideas on how to study! -

The 203 Teaching Team

The 3 T’s of Success 1. Talking: Don’t just read this content, get together with others and review out loud! The best way I learned was with others in a group setting for both homework AND review sessions. 2. Teaching: Teaching others what you have learned can help reinforce learned content. Present this information to your friends, your cat, whoever you want so long as you’re facilitating the content 3. Trust: Trust your gut! If you think you know something on the test you probably do. It’s important to study but trust yourself in the fact that you made it to UW (nice) which means you know how to take a test. Long story short ur a baddie b and u got this xoxo

I would say the hardest part for me about psych 210 was how much information we covered every day and finding time to review all of it. I found the study guide in TopHat to be the most helpful when organizing my thoughts before the exams. The great thing about Dr. McNichols is that she is not trying to trick you and we are all providing as much helpful information as we can. I used information from the book and also from my typed in-class notes and put that information in its correct section. I would recommend finding a friend and quizzing each other on each of the topics in order to make sure you can recall the information. I would watch the Panoptos for further explanation of topics that can be really confusing, like the anatomy. I really struggled with the concepts of Mullerian Ducts and all that information in the Sex and Gender section and to be honest, I still got it wrong on the exam. My best piece of advice is to not be too hard on yourself, give yourself enough time to study and you will do great. Your grade does not define you, but we are all still hoping you do well.

As a past student who both loved and did well in this class, the best advice I can give is to go to class and be present during the lecture. Professor McNichols is fairly straightforward

with her lectures and provides lots of great information that’s not directly on the slides, so it’s important to listen and take notes while she’s talking. Because the slides are posted online, don’t feel a need to write down everything that’s on them but rather the content of what she says so you can add to the information on the slides later. If you have questions, don’t be afraid to ask (Professor McNichols or any of the TAs) - if asking in person is uncomfortable for you then sending an email or going to office hours are also great options. The most important thing is to keep an open mind and have fun in this class! Human sexuality is so interesting and a great thing to understand better. :)

I usually prepped for PSYCH 210 exams by reviewing lecture notes (my own and the slides on TopHat), filling out the study guides, and answering the study questions. A strategy that has worked for me (and continues to do so) is identifying the material that I know vs. the concepts I don’t know. I did this by pinpointing the topics in the study guide and the study questions that I was struggling with - I’d then focus more study time on those topics (along with a quick review of the things I already know). For more difficult concepts, I’d make flow charts and/or diagrams so that I could study the processes/concepts visually, and also find ways in which I could apply the material to my life and/or the real world (plenty of real-world application examples were discussed in the lectures, in-class movies & panels)....
