Sample of a Subject by Subject Essay Using The Descent and Cabin in the Woods 1 An Analysis of Sarah and Dana’s Degeneration through Violence and Passion in The Descent and Cabin in the Woods In Marshall’s The Descent and Goddard’s Cabin in the Woods, Sarah and Dana use different types of violence such as legitimate, illegitimate, and valourous violence in their attempts to survive in the wilderness. Legitimate violence is violence done for self-defense and defense of others. Illegitimate violence is violence done out of a desire for revenge. Valourous violence is violence done with an element of self-sacrifice. First, in The Descent, Sarah demonstrates legitimate but problematic violence when she stomps three times on the child monster’s face. Then, Sarah shows legitimate but problematic violence when she gouges out the monster’s eyes with her thumbs. Finally, Sarah performs illegitimate violence when she stabs Juno in the leg with an axe. Similar to Sarah, Dana, in Cabin in the Woods, uses legitimate violence when she kills the zombie in the Black Room. Then, Dana shows legitimate but problematic violence when she hits the Purge button to use the monsters as a weapon against the soldiers. Finally, Dana illustrates problematic valourous violence when she warns Marty of the approaching zombie to save his life. Ultimately, in different ways, Sarah and Dana become too degenerated by passion to return back to civilization as members of the establishment. First, Sarah demonstrates legitimate violence when she stomps three times on the child monster’s face. The child monster attacks Sarah from behind and tries to rip out her throat to kill her. Sarah throws the child monster onto the ground and stomps three times on the child monster’s face. Since the child monster tries to kill her, Sarah acts in self-defense when she kills the child monster to save her own life. Thus, Sarah demonstrates legitimate violence when she kills the child monster. However, there is a problematic aspect to Sarah’s use of legitimate violence. Sarah uses her foot, a primitive weapon, which shows Sarah has a weaker connection to civilization when she kills. Also, Sarah’s attack on the child monster’s face also shows her attempt to dehumanize the monster she kills. Sarah rejects her own connection to humanity when she destroys the face of a child even if the child appears monstrous. Thus, despite using legitimate violence, Sarah starts her process of degeneration with her problematic killing. Then, Sarah shows legitimate violence when she gouges/pokes out the monster’s eyes with her thumbs [write out entire analytical body paragraph]. Finally, Sarah performs illegitimate violence when she stabs Juno in the leg with an axe [write out entire analytical body paragraph]. Similar to Sarah, Dana, in Cabin in the Woods, uses legitimate violence when she kills the zombie in the Black Room. The zombie tries to kill Holden and pulls him up towards the ceiling. Dana hits the zombie with a crowbar and stabs it with a knife as she becomes blooded in her first kill. Since the zombie tries to kill both Holden and Dana, Dana uses violence in defense of others and self-defense when she kills the zombie. Thus, Dana uses legitimate violence. Although Dana connects to passion in order to kill, she uses high tech phallic weapons such as a crowbar and a knife, which connect her to the power of civilization. Thus, Dana remains connected to civilization even as she connects to passion to kill. Thus, unlike Sarah who degenerates significantly as Sarah connects to passion when she stomps on the child monster’s face, Dana only degenerates slightly as she connects to passion in her first kill. Then, Dana shows legitimate but problematic violence when she hits the Purge button to use the monsters as a weapon against the soldiers [write out entire analytical body paragraph].

Sample of a Subject by Subject Essay Using The Descent and Cabin in the Woods 2 Finally, Dana illustrates problematic valourous violence when she warns Marty of the approaching zombie to save his life. As the zombie Anna approaches Marty with an axe, Dana calls out Marty’s name to try and warn him of the danger he cannot see. If Marty does not dies before the sun rises, Dana, Marty, and the entire world will be destroyed by the pagan gods beneath the earth. Thus, since Dana is willing to sacrifice her own life which would be saved by Marty’s death, Dana demonstrates valourous violence when she warns him. However, there is a problematic aspect to Dana’s valourous warning. Dana saves Marty’s life for a few minutes, but, once the sun rises, the pagan gods will destroy everyone including Dana and Marty. Thus, Dana saving Marty is illogical and connects her to passion not the logic of civilization and the establishment. She saves Marty because he is her friend. She wants to punish the establishment for sacrificing her friends to the pagan gods as she says that it may be time to give someone else a chance instead of humanity. Therefore, Dana degenerates away from the logic and morality of civilization as she connects to passion in her friendship and desire to see humanity replaced by the pagan gods. Like Sarah, Dana’s last act of violence is connected to illogic and a desire for revenge, which shows both women have degenerated through their use of violence in the wilderness and are unable to return back to civilization as members of the establishment. In conclusion, although Sarah and Dana use different types of violence in their attempts to survive the wilderness, they both degenerate due to passion. Sarah demonstrates legitimate violence when she stomps on the child monster’s face and gouges out the monster’s eyes with her thumbs. Then, Sarah performs illegitimate violence when she stabs Juno in the leg with an axe. Similar to Sarah, Dana uses legitimate violence when she kills the zombie in the Black Room and hits the Purge button to use the monsters as a weapon against the soldiers. However, Dana illustrates problematic valourous violence when she warns Marty of the approaching zombie to save his life. Ultimately, as a result of using violence in the wilderness, although their paths are slightly different, Sarah and Dana become too degenerated by passion to return back to civilization as members of the establishment.

So, this essay sample shows how to construct an essay when you are using subjectby subject formatting, with an introduction, 6 body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

For the first 3 body paragraphs, focus on analyzing the first text, in this case, The Descent. Then for body paragraphs 4, 5, 6, focus on the second text, in this case Cabin in the Woods. You must bring in an indirect comparison or contrast to the two texts in body paragraph 4 in order to ensure that you are writing an integrated discussion of the two texts; Bring in an indirect comparison and or contrast, only if it makes logical sense to do so at the beginning of paragraphs 5 and 6.I did NOT continue to make an indirect comparison or contrast to Sarah and Dana at the beginnings of the body paragraphs 5 and 6. However, in body paragraph 6, make sure to compare or contrast the two characters as the last sentence or two of that last body paragraph in order to connect your points back to your secondary argument....
