The Ramayana (Ch. 4-6) – Journal It is amazing to see how caring and willing to live up to promises the characters of this epic poem are. Today, the family dynamic that most of us experience is not nearly as strong as that in which we have read about in The Ramayana. At the end of chapter six, it is proven that a family feud can never truly end a brother’s love. Sugreeva and Vali have been feuding for years because Vali “thought that Sugreeva had been trying to seal him off underground” (Narayan 101) and take over his kingdom. It was all just a big misunderstanding, but no one realized it until the end. Rama finally tells Vali, in his dying minutes that “when [Sugreeva] still struggled to explain and sought [Vali’s] pardon for any mistake, [he] rejected his appeal” (110). Upon this realization, Vali and Sugreeva come to see the real story; Vali is able to die in peace knowing his family is reunited. Jatayu can be taken as an example of a character who kept a promise; he was heart-broken to hear the news about Dasaratha’s death and “swore to end his life” (66), but Rama and Lakshmana pleaded with him not to. He thus promised to live and to take on “the task of protecting them, especially Sita” (66). He lived up to this promise and was killed while trying to keep Sita from the evil Ravana who was trying to take her, without her consent, as his wife. The level of commitment to familial values and promises that is expressed in this story is so very inspiring. The integrity and courage of these characters will forever be remembered as this epic poem is passed down for many more generations to come....
