TechnicalMemoranda  TheWookiesTeam Preparedby:ManuelGallego,SergioSánchez,YasminMalhisandCarlosGómez Date:6October,2019  Summary Thepurposeofthismemorandumistoshowtheimprovementsobtainedinthelocal digitalizationanddevelopmentofisolatedcommunitiesthroughtheuseofsustainableand renewableenergysources.Theimplementationofcheapmodularsolarpanelshasimproved significantlytheincorporationofthesecommunitiesintotheglobalizedworld. Althoughweconsiderthateverycommunityshouldhaveapersonalizedenergysources consideringtheirenvironment,insteadofmassproducingsolarpanelsineverycommunity.   Background Atfirst,weconsideredtogeneralizetheenergysource,focusedonofeolicenergy,using wind-powergenerators. Thatideacreatedseveraltechnicalproblems,likethedifficultiesoftheinstallationofthe generators(thatareexpensiveandfragile). Thepriceofthegeneratorsisbasedonthedifficultiesintransportingthecomponentsand thenecessityofaspecializedbodyofworkerstosupervisetheconditionofthe infrastructure. WefoundthatinSpain,theenergysourcethatcanbegeneralizedsuccessfullyistheSolar Energy.Thatisbasedontheefficiency,thelowpriceofitandthelowrequestofsupervision oftheinfrastructure. Asthesetypeofgeneratorsareeasiertobuildandsupervise,thepeopleofthevillagehave newworkingopportunitiesinthisnewworkfield. Technically,thisgeneratorsarealsoeasiertotransportandtoproduce,sothatmakesthe pricelower. Butattheend,everyvillagewouldneedastudyaboutthetypeof“energyplant”thatwillbe moreefficientforthem,thatwillberelatedtothetypeofecosystemandtheirenergetical needs.  Evaluation Basedonourresearch,itappearstobethattheimplementationofrenewableenergiesin ruralcommunitieshasanimmenseimpactonthelifeofsaidcommunitiesthroughoutthe world,eveniftheyalreadyhaveaccesstoelectricity.Thisimplementationsolvesbasic problemsinruralcommunitieswhileclosingthedigitalgap.Wedistinguishtwocases:rural communitiesinSpainandruralcommunitiesinLatinAmerica.  InthecaseofSpain,mostruralcommunitiesalreadyhaveelectricity,buthavenoaccessto internet.Withtheprogram“Wifi4EU”morethan500spanishcommunitieswillgainaccessto theinternet,connectingthemwiththerestofSpain.Thisprovidesisolatedcommunitieswith morepossibilitiesofcommunicationandhelpstoconnectthemwiththeglobalmarket.

Furthermore,theprojectfrom“Endesa”toimplantrenewableenergypowerplantsinisolated regionsinSpainhasresurrectedthesealmostabandonedmunicipalities,byattractingyoung professionalstothesecommunitiestofightthedepopulationsufferedintowns.  TheimplementationofenergysourcesinruralLatinAmericahasempoweredcommunities tounprecedentedlevels.Accordingtoareportfrom“ELMUNDO”,theinstallationof renewableenergyplantsemploysmembersofthecommunity,improvingitseconomic developmentanditsprofessionalformation,andallowsthemtobeindependentfromthe regionalcities.Thisisdonewhilepreservingtheenvironmentoftheirecosystembyavoiding otherformsofenergyproduction,likeburningwood.Italsoimprovessignificantlytheaccess toonlineeducation,avoidinglongdistancestoattendschoolanddiminishingdrop-rates.  Recommendations Ourteamstronglyrecommendstoguaranteeaccesstoelectricitytoruralcommunities throughouttheworld.Ithasbeenshownthattheseprojectsempowersandincreasesthe levelsofeducationanddevelopment,whileavoidingpollutingactivitiestoobtainenergy.  Itwouldbeadvisabletoconsiderthespecificsituationoftheseregionsastodeterminethe mostefficientwaysofusingtheirenvironmenttoproducecleanandaffordableenergy,while consideringthelevelofinfrastructureofeachcommunity.Iftheparticularsituationsarenot considered,theprojectcouldfail,whichcoulddamagetherelationsbetweenthe communitiesandrenewableenergies. Wealsorecommendtointegratethecommunitytotheprojecttoachievesuccess,because iftheyareleftoutitwillnothavesuchanimportantimpactonthedevelopmentand formationofthetownspeople.   Sources
