When choosing a career in technology, one would have to consider which pathway they will want to take. Technology has different components of its field that makes this field diverse. Computer Science, information systems, engineering, and information technology are the top focuses of technology that are often considered by people. Computer science is the scientific study of the systematic processing of information. Information Systems is the study of networks of hardware and software that people, and organizations use to collect, filter, process, create and distribute data. Engineering in Technology is the study of both engineering and technology that helps with real world problems. Information Technology is the study or use of systems for storing retrieving and sending information whether is through telecommunications or computers. With every career decision, you would want to start with entry level and work your way up to senior/higher level. I have chosen three jobs within Technology that I have caught my interest, which are: Service Desk Support, Software Quality Assurance, and Epic Analyst. Service Desk Support is an entry level career that deals with a variety of issues. Depending on the organization, they can be considered either service desk support analyst or help desk support. They ensure user issues are triaged for further processing or investigation, provided sufficient communication between vendors, third party, end users and etc, and improve optimization through multiple components. They should be able to identify issues, record issues, support problem identification, advise users on how resolve the issue, able to monitor all issues with resolution that fits users needs, and provide essential security and support. The skills needed for this job is communication, detail oriented, basic technology knowledge, and diversity. The background that a Service Desk Support would need is a bachelor’s in computer science, information technology, or programming as well as, not mandatory, a certification in support.

Software quality Assurance engineer or Software QA overseas every phase of software development to ensure that the design and software meets the users needs. They work together by breaking up into teams so they can concentrate on a certain issue assigned. The responsibilities and roles of a Software QA engineer is to design and run systems to distinguish issues, document cases, record test results and progress, create test plans, discover errors and glitches within the software, research and analyze product features to fit users needs and wants from the software. The education background is a bachelor’s and master’s degree in software design, computer science, and engineering. Knowledge in SQL is a requirement for this position. SQL is Structured Query Language which is a international standard database. Their skills should include communication, diversity, time management, team player and detail oriented. Epic Analyst is my all-time career. Epic is a particular piece of software or an application that aids hospitals, pharmacies, clinics, and any healthcare background with their electronic record keeping. The main responsibilities are to plan, execute and support the application to end users. Other responsibilities include identify and resolve issues, provide information to end users with Epic tools, understand user requirements and security check points, assist with implementation, and create/run reports as needed. Qualifications for this role is a bachelor’s Degree in business, IT, Healthcare, or related fields. Have 5 years in healthcare IT with the knowledge of workflow process, and epic certification. Epic certification is a process that can take anywhere from 3 months to a year to earn. Depending on what level you are trying to pursue, determines which epic certification you would need to get. Skills needed would be communication, problem solving, clinical workflow, end user management, strong interpersonal skills, Strong PC skills which include Microsoft Office.

Each career recommends having a certification in particular system or computing language. Gaining those certifications can help with better understanding the job or task at hand and advance your knowledge.
