Portfolio Task 6 Standard Operating Environment Plan Business Scenario & Purpose The Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology (FSET) at Swinburne University of Technology has decided to upgrade its Standard Operating Environment from Windows 7 to Windows 10 throughout its computer lab rooms. FSET has several schools, including School of Software and Electrical Engineering, School of Science and School of Engineering), that offer various courses and units. The students in those schools share many computer lab rooms located in the EN building and the BA building, e.g., the ones used for this unit. Swinburne university of technology support standard operating environment (SOE) for desktop, notebooks and computers. The SOE is designed to ensure the large number of computers, notebook and desktop provide the necessary functionality to its staff and students. It can be maintained, updated and audited by its staff in a sequence that justify both availability and reliability with a minimum interruption tom its staff and students as well as also add a cost that’s appropriate to the university.

The purpose of the SOE plan to ensure:   

That the software segment of the universities computer and desktop meets Swinburne university of technologies lawful obligations in regard with usage and copyright. That the operating system must need to be reliable and consistent That the data is providing by the clients must need to be secure and protected from tampering by a unauthorized person also as well as being misuse or theft.

The standard operating environment (SOE) comprises the hardware on all Information technology services supported by a desktop computer. When installing a new computer or update the previous one by the request of the client it need to make sure All standard operating system (SOE) and licensed application is patched to the latest approved operating system and virus patch level.

Computer definitions Standard Configurations   

The computer configurations are flexible with the Standard operating system 7-day delivery Full ITS support

Variation and exceptions In Swinburne University there are a number of computers at the University that are currently operating on Windows 7 and need to be upgraded to Windows 10.

Windows 10 Windows 10 need to be installed on Swinburne owned machines by exception. This can be done either purchase time or via a request to the ITS service desk. If requested via the ITS Service Desk, the bios on the machine will need to be altered—Information technology services is able to facilitate this.

For Windows virtual machines we’ll need to purchase the Swinburne software bundle which includes windows 10 enterprise, Symantec Endpoint protection and office 365. This is not the full Swinburne bundle installed on new machines—and instead is only to facilitate general use within virtual Machines. Actually a 145$ bundle will charge for this. The virtual machine also need to joined the Swinburne domain to facilitate the management, security compliance and license tracking.

Tablets and iPads Tablets are expected to enroll via the Mobile device project management system. Management of devices allow us to:    

register the tablet or iPad to Swinburne network and allocate a IT number. configure Swinburne Wi-Fi configure Swinburne student email secure the device with a passcode

Other All other software and hardware which are not published by the standard operating environment is to be requested via information technology services.

Swinburne software bundle The Swinburne University of technology software bundle comes with all new standard and extended configuration of computers. The Swinburne software bundle don’t include the Configure to order option in machines. Windows 10 64 bit

OS X 10.10(mac)

Need other software The standard Operating environment (SOE) comprises a baseline of application to install all information technology services which is currently supported by the desktop computers. Some additional application is now available on mac related software portals. In windows 10 the distributing software portal via system center configuration manager is currently under development. While in Swinburne SCCM is already in use by some departments. ITS is using SCCM to manage desktop, labs, servers and imaging

When installing a new computer or rebuild the existing one the information technology services will install all standard operating environment.

Scope The guideline is applied to the computer and devices who are supported by ITS that are used by Swinburne university staff and student. All hardware and software need to be owned by Swinburne university. These computers are fully supported by ITS. Computers which are used in laboratory or special purpose in research may treat as a expectation to this standard.

Expectations Installation Here are the system requirements for Windows 10:     

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) for a 32-bit version, or 2GB for 64-bit Hard disk space: 16GB for a 32-bit OS; 20GB for 64-bit OS Graphics card: DirectX 9 or later with WDDM 1.0 driver Display: 1024x600

Installation Guidelines       

Physically need to be connect when set-up the device Ensuring that the client can log in their Swinburne domain by their own username and password. Ensuring that customer can connect with the default network home drive. setup any special keyboard and mouse setup Microsoft outlook and sent a test mail verifying setup connection to websites. Remove any packaging.

Security All Swinburne standard operating environment units are padlocked and also their bios have locked. Software updates (security) released by information technology services need to be apply as soon as possible.

Software The standard software bundle will remain in same place including ITS services configured firewall rules, management profile and administrative accounts.

Admin rights Administrator rights will not be granted at the time of installation.

Antivirus Enterprise class antivirus software (e.g. Symantec endpoint protection) is installed

Swinburne domain The machine is joined or bound to the Swinburne domain.

Logging in A user code and password must need to be used to log into the computer and Swinburne system and services.

Policies All Swinburne university policies must need to be follow

Guidelines Logging in Local accounts and auto-login are not be used at Swinburne with Swinburne without an information technology services expectation. Multiuser units(machine) which save user code credentials to facilitate the access in internet, printing and share drives must need to be prohibited without the permission of an Its exception.

Procurement The service which are providing by ITS are responsible for the provision of computer hardware and software via supplier agreement, including all government agreement.

Licensing The licensing obligation for core software installed on Standard Operating Environment (SOE) computers is the responsibility of Information Technology Services. The licensing of all non-core application which are installed on computer will be the responsibility of the faculty or department who are providing the software to the end user.

Data storage ITS encourage all student and staff to create regular backup of their data and information. ITS is not responsible for the data stored on the local drive or external storage. Staff and student need to store data on Its data center hosted network storage devices which is probably 1 tb on cloud.

Services and Repair Technical support for the computers such as hardware must need to be requested via its service desk.

Rental scheme On the basis of longevity of equipment, usage and warranties, and rental periods have been determined to the different categories of the equipment. The rental period is a lease term and will apply as follow:

Description

Rental Period

Student Computer & Laboratory Computers

4 Years

Lecture Theatre Computers

3 Years

Staff Laptop &Computers

3 Years

Staff Desktop &Computers

4 Years

Budget center will be charged for recurring monthly rental for each computer on basic of the rental period of that computer. At the end of this rental period the computer will be eligible for replacement.   

24 months for tablets 36 months for laptops 48 months for desktops (excluding labs)

If the budget center wants, they can use the computer until the computer reaches priority replacement age:   

36 months for tablets 48 months for laptops 60 months for desktops (excluding labs)

Rental charges Rental charges will be delivered for the purchase price of the windows 10 server plus standardized costs for delivery and disposal, which is charged over the rental period on monthly basis. For example; Price of new pcs* $1,000.00 Rental Period (months ) Rental rate per month

48 $20.83

Rental charges will be proceeding on a monthly basis such as 36 month or 48 month (* Not actual costs. Actual costs will depend on negotiated contract prices at time of purchase.)
