Summary on “The Case for Reparations” by Ta-Nehisi Coates This reading is about Clyde Ross, a black man who was born in Mississippi. Ross grew up watching his parents being cheated by white people. Ross searched for equality for blacks among the prominent white people. He lived in a society that stripped him of his rights and worth. In order to get away from this unjust society, Ross goes off to fight in world war two, however, nothing changed when he came back home. Ross later moved to Chicago where he worked and got married. However he was not allowed to own a home because of his skin color. Blacks in this society found themselves exploited financially by the system. The author, Coates explains that black people are worthy of equal rights, however this society will not allow it, and this issue still exists today. Coates also gives a brief description of history, from the Holocaust to Jim Crow Laws. He explains that reparations have been paid for the suffering that Jews faced. However in my own opinion, no amount of money can make up for the injustice that millions of people faced, and still face today. What about the people who were murdered? How do you pay something back like that? Would you be able to pay with another life? It makes no sense to me that a monetary forgiveness could ever make up for something that emotionally, physically and mentally affected millions of jews in the Holocaust. In this same sense, money cannot make up for the millions of black people that suffered under the hands of this unjust system....
