The evolution of sport with modern time has made us all aware of the endless possibilities of factors that can have detrimental implications on an individual’s participation in any given sport. These factors can be described as equity and equality, although these are two concepts that are hard to comprehend and define a man known as Professor Peter Figueroa has devised of a framework to try and allow us to understand it with a broader knowledge. The framework developed by Professor Peter Figueroa has been a useful tool in the investigation of issues and ideas surrounding equity, access and equality in exercise, sport and physical activity. Within this structure are 5 levels and each and every level are strongly interconnected with the others. The first level of this framework is the individual level, this level is defined as our own attitudes, values and beliefs, particularly those related to stereotypes and prejudices. The next level of the framework is the interpersonal level and the interpersonal level is concerned with our interactions with others, our relationships with peers and others, as well as our patterns of influence and how these might affect access and equity to exercise, sport

It is concerned with the ways in which organisations such as schools or clubs might operate to advantage or disadvantage particular groups with specific needs, which are different from ‘mainstream’ groups. The second last level is known as the structural level of Figueroa’s framework, this level examines inequities within society on a much larger scale. It examines how social status might impact on the types and levels of participation by various groups within society. The final level of this complicated tool is the cultural level and the cultural level is concerned with shared assumptions, beliefs and values about issues such as gender or race and socioeconomic status and how these issues might affect access and equity to exercise, sport and physical activity. Speaking about equity, equity and equality has a massive impact on sports well fair. Although closely related, these terms have a subtle difference that is important to understand. Equity is all about the concept of a social situation where individuals and groups have the same status, rights, access and opportunities. However on the other hand equality is when social justice and fairness prevail in decision making. Principles that underpin equity allow for an unequal distribution of resources so that a degree of fairness can prevail. Throughout this article the topics of Figueroa framework will be mentioned and in particular the structural and cultural level. These two levels have a detrimental impact on the participation rate of tennis as a whole and to be specific, Townsville’s tennis associations. These two levels may seem very different yet they both have an equal contribution to the equity and equality towards sport....
