The Far Away Brothers is a novel in which we get to experience the journey of two twin brothers from El Salvador. The author, Lauren Markham expresses her narrative in devious ways to highlight the dangerous lifestyle many immigrants face living in their home countries that ultimately leads to their decision of leaving to a safer place. From the very beginning, we feel sympathy for Ernesto and Raul, the twins, and the rest of their family. Markham was effective in expressing the family is good people who unfortunately live with very little resources in a town filled with violence, this urges us to feel bad for them and hope for the best. This is Markham’s use of pathos.

Later on, we begging to learn about the journey the twin will have to endure to get to America. Markham provides factual evidence of this by providing statistics from plenty of organizations and departments that deal with immigration. She does this with the use of logos in her writing, she informs us.

Along with the statistical evidence provided, we are shown the credibility of that evidence. Markham makes sure to name the sources of her information, whether that be the Houston Chronicle or stats from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website. This is her use of ethos, by providing the credibility of her sources we know the information she provides to be true and accurate. Although many individuals believe that immigrants are a harm to society they fail to see the good they actually do. Many immigrants are hard-working people who simply want the best for their family and come here for that very reason. They don’t wish to sell drugs and create violence, they’re fleeing from it all in hope of a better life here in the U.S. Markham made her view very clear in which she believes these children are only trying to help themselves and their families.
