MICHAELLA PIZARRO BSMLS SECTION 3 PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION The Flight From Conversation A. Identify the main idea of the essay. - In the year 2012, Sherry Turkle published an essay titled "The Flight from Conversation." The essay emphasizes how technology manipulates humanity, particularly when it comes to communicating with others. Indeed, the essay explains how technological improvements have transformed traditional face-to-face conversation into a social media link. Furthermore, rather than engaging in a meaningful discussion, people tend to rely on their technological devices to communicate. In a brief, Sherry Turkle's essay is on how technology has affected communication over time.

B. How does the writer support the main idea? Enumerate the examples provided. - Throughout the article, the author uses examples to support her main point. Demonstrate that we've lost our ability to converse and have replaced it with texting and social networking. "At home, families sit together texting and reading emails," Sherry Turkle stated, which is correct because individuals nowadays utilize technology instead of conversing with their family about their life. Turkle backs up her main point with examples throughout the text.“We are tempted to imagine that little 'sips' of online connection grow into one huge sip of real conversation,” Turkle writes in paragraph 12. They don't, however. Email, Twitter, and Facebook are all useful in politics, business, romance, and friendship. However, as useful as they are, they are not a replacement for dialogue. C. According to the writer, what is the difference between “conversation and connection?” What does face-to-face conversation teach us? How? - Patience and social skills are required for conversation. It necessitates the involvement of people who are interested about in the topic. People seek and achieve connection through a variety of means made accessible by ever-increasing technological advancements. It teaches us to trust the individual to whom we are delivering information in face-to-face talks. It also allows us to see things from diverse perspectives and gain a better understanding of events. The conversation's continuation allows us to practice our social skills while also providing a platform for ongoing learning.

D. What does “being alone together mean”? Cite specific instances.

- According to the essay, being alone implies you're fully alone, and you're more prone to seek out contacts and activities to avoid feeling unhappy and lonely. In actuality, you're just locking yourself in a room, moving around, and lowering your head to give the idea that you're with someone. Trust your social media connections and take a look at your social media posts because you think they're alright with you instead of seeing them in person and talking face-to-face. E. Explain the title. What does the “flight from conversation” do to us? - "The Flight from Conversation" highlights the impact of technology on our communication. It also shows how technology impacts our true selves since many people have transformed as a result of social networking. He helped us realize how important it is to communicate in person rather than on social media. Because online communication simplifies complex problems, we are unable to pose questions that necessitate critical and analytical thought. It helps us forget that human relationships are demanding and require ongoing communication in order to survive and thrive. It erases from our minds the most important and natural thing that individuals should do, which is to communicate with others in person rather than through social media apps. F. Explain the following lines: 

“We expect more from technology and less from one another”

- Because of our excessive reliance on technology, this statement implies that we have mentally and physically immersed ourselves in it. We have higher expectations of her than of ourselves and others. For example, we have a tendency to believe that we are never alone owing to the existence of this modern equipment. We feel at ease since we can constantly engage and converse with this and this concept. People cannot survive without technology during a pandemic. Students who need to attend their classes online, for example. Because our devices receive the majority of our attention, we demand more from them and less from others.  “I share, therefore I am” - That, in my opinion, implies that what you say about others may not be accurate. As stated in the article, "SMS, email, and publishing allow us to present the self that we want to be," what we post can be altered and may not be entirely accurate. To just fit into the culture you want to be a part of, presenting yourself to what you want means altering yourself or not being true to yourself.

G. What does the writer suggest we do so we can make room from conversations?

- Sherry Turkle recommended several things that anybody may do to encourage others to talk. Restricting the use of technology at home, school, work, or other locations will have a significant influence on the discussion, because people will spend that time communicating with each other instead of utilizing electronic gadgets. Furthermore, automobiles may be constructed as "devicefree zones," and older people must show younger generations the value of dialogue. 

Do you agree with the writer? Explain your answer.

- I agree with the author's proposal since it allows us to communicate our real thoughts and reactions. I understand how it feels since we seldom speak to each other at home, and many young people, like myself, suffer from anxiety and need someone to confide in. The author's idea is a great way to have the chance to chat about life in a face-to-face setting....
