the History of the Blessed Men CHAPTER ONE who lived in the days of Jeremiah the Prophet Divisions 1-35 by Gerisamus the Monk, in Lydia in AD 450, in the name of the church at Cyprus (and Ireland) a Gospel of Matthew HISTORY OF THE BLESSED 1. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, one God. 2. Hearken, O brethren, and we will relate to you a new history, that is to say, we will tell you the story of the holy, righteous, and blessed men who lived in the days of Jeremiah the prophet, the son of Hilkiah. Jeremiah 1:1 3. Now there reigned at the time a king whose name was Zedekiah, the son of Josiah, 2 Kings 24:19 and he walked not in the way of his father, 1st Chronicles 3:15 yet made a graven image of an idol for himself, and he bowed down before it in secret; 4. then he spake openly, saying, "I am the son of David, of the house of Judah"; and this thing was heard in Jerusalem and in all the borders thereof. 5. And it came to pass, that when the holy men who were in Jerusalem heard these words, their hearts were sorry with a great sorrow, and they went and told Saint Jeremiah the Prophet. 6. Go thou to Zedekiah and rebuke him." 9. So Jeremiah rose up and went with his 2 disciples Baruch and Hormizd, and when he had come to Jerusalem he went into the king's presence. 10. And Jeremiah answered and said unto him, "Thus saith God Almighty, Is it indeed true that thou doest these things before Me? 11. —now Zedekiah's (claims of) "I am of the house of Judah, the lion's whelp'— the holy lion David 12. And wilt thou take strange gods and worship them, and forsake Me?" 13. And when Zedekiah heard these words he became exceedingly angry with Jeremiah, and he ordered Jeremiah cast into a stinking pit. 14. Then Abimelech, the king's disciple went to Jeremiah and took with him food for him to eat, and comforted him. 15. And Jeremiah answered and said unto Abimelech, "Fear not, O my son, for thou art a fearer of God Almighty, and thou shalt not see the chastisement and wrath that shall come upon the king and upon the people of Israel;" 16. and Abimelech received his prayer and his blessing and went his way. 17. And Jeremiah abode 3 days and 3 nights in the pit, and after those days God Almighty sent an angel and brought him out therefrom, and he stood before God Almighty. 18. And God Almighty answered and said unto him, "Fear not, O My servant Jeremiah, yet do thou that that I shall command thee....
