Description

GATTACA Gattaca is an American science fiction film which is directed by Andrew Niccol and released on 1997. This film represents the author’s vision for future life for human society. The author uses a company, called eugenics, to represent the research in future, where this company able to know child’s potential since baby was born. This company also has a special research on the genetic, which make them able to know the potential of children through genetic selection to ensure they possess the best hereditary traits of their parents. The author uses a boy to represent the whole story, who is called Vincent Anton Freeman. He is the man who was conceived outside the eugenics program and have a lot of struggling moment in order to realize his dream to travel into space. He is born with terrible indications which he only get the 30.2 years life expectancy and has high probability of several disease order, such as cancer, heart disease, etc. Even though he is get discriminant by genetics and does not have even chances with other, he always believes in himself. Eventually, his great ethics got paid by Jerome Eugene Morrow, who help Vincent to disguise himself as Jerome. Thus, it makes Vincent able to work and Gattaca to realise his dreams. Although, he has a struggling moment at Gattaca he realises and believes in himself to realise his goal. In this film, I find something interesting at the title. The author uses GATTACA as the tittle. If we look deeper into it, we got 4 letter, which is G, A, T, and C. This four letters all represent the nucleobases of DNA. C stands for cytosine, G stands for guanine, T stands for thymine, and A stands for adenine. The author clearly picture and tell us that this movie will have a lot of influence on technology and biology, especially genetics. In this story, I get interesting when I see the staircase in the Jerome’s house. It was displayed as an image in DVD’s cover and it was so central on the movie. It is pretty ugly to build the staircase in a circle with small radius when have a lot of areas to build it. Since the sign we get from the title, the author clearly uses this staircase as a represent of the DNA. If we look closer on the staircase, we can see that the shape of the staircase is the double helix model of DNA. Since Vincent adopted Jerome’s identity, it clearly symbolized that Jerome and Vincent to become each other. This staircase also represent the Jerome’s determination to remain living in his society. Even though his foot does not able to move and has a lot of struggling to climb up, he pulls himself slowly but surely to climb up and cover Vincent’s identity. An impossible thing like this never become a barrier for Jerome to keep his status around his society.

Name also very important for a story. Sometimes the author uses special names to represent the story. Moreover, in this film, I believe that the author uses Jerome to represent this story. Jerome to represent Genome, the genetic material of an organism, which is very similar between Jerome and Genome. His middle name, Eugene, also represents eugenics, the research to improving the genetic quality in human race. Thus, his last name, Morrow, also represent tomorrow, which can be translated as a future. I also believes that the author also uses Vincent Anton Freeman with deep consideration. When I search the meaning of Vincent in google, it displays that it is derived from the Latin name Vincentius, which means to conquer or win. This represent his ultimate success, despite he has a lot of disadvantages such as: genetic discrimination and weak body. It also the reason why he has a great ethics on his journey and the author also tell us the importance of the human spirit. His last name, Freeman, also shows his victory against the difficulties he had. However, I see this Freeman as an ironic way, because, historically the title ‘freeman’ was given to the slave, who able through their efforts and hard work to earn his society’s state as a citizen. For me, this is ironic, because the efforts and determination he has, he still remain as an invalid. Gattaca does not want to grant the amount of hard work and determination that he gives. This become the irony of the story even though he shining as a star in Gattaca, people will know his success as Jerome’s success, because Jerome is the one, who gives Vincent the opportunity to be equal/superior as genetic with others. Whole of this film, the author uses the technology combine with Jerome’s life adventure to create this film interesting for the audience. Not only science and fiction’s genre lovers, but also romance’s genre lovers can enjoy this movies too. The Scene which display Vincent and Irene shows a romance scene between them. Thus, the adventure, love scene, and technology was assembled very well in a beautiful way by the author. As the technology was already widespread and used by people all over the world, it rapidly develops right now. Thus, it rapid development will have a big impact on the human knowledge. This technology will help human to get near to the perfection knowledge about intelligence, especially genetics. The author’s vision will be soon implemented in human’s life and there are already some China’s scientist try this experiment to make a superior baby eith the help from the genetical. In gattaca, everyone will live healthier, longer, and smarter than the real world. This question will be back to us someday. Will parents order the perfect babies? Would they rather to take a small chance in DNA or order the perfection? There are a lot of shoes across the world, how many people are prepare to buy random shoes?...
