“The Lottery”, by Shirley Jackson felt to me like a stagnant, dystopian society that had no plans of changing in the future. It was a society that reminded me of parts of rural America where, for example, the Confederate flag still waves with pride and no one questions the morality of the symbol unless they feel impacted negatively by it. In “The Lottery”, It took until Ms. Summers became the not-so-lucky lottery winner until she spoke against it. The dialogue regarding the black box made realize everyone in the town probably knew that it was an inherently bad thing that leads to an unjust stoning of someone, and they only become vocal of its injustice in their last moments. “ It  isn't fair, it isn't right” were the last few words we get to read from Ms. Summers until the townspeople assumingly kill her. It is no guarantee that and earlier rebellion would have saved her, but she would have at least had the chance to stand her ground for whoever were to draw the lottery. This story did not evoke much emotion from me because it felt the characters themselves did not feel empathy for each other outside of protecting their own family. Young kids were even gathering stones early in the story, foreshadowing a ritualistic scene that will most likely repeat time and time again in their small town....
