The Peter Principle

The Peter Principal is a highly talked about issue that is seen in thousands of businesses all around the world. It is a controversial issue that causes high stress levels, poor work ethic, insubordination and employee dissatisfaction. The issue of a manager, leader, supervisor or even a commanding officer taking credit for something that was a lower level employee’s idea or accomplishment. These people are often given recognition by the boss above their own level and credit is not given where credit is due. One of the most common companies that this is seen (at least by me) is Disney. I have worked with Disney for 7 years and 5 of which were in attractions. During busy seasons, we would work as hard as possible usually over long shift hours. After accomplishing a certain task such as surpassing the amount of people carried over an established time. After successfully doing the task, sometimes into the early hours of the morning, we leave feeling accomplished and happy. Unfortunately the next day when you come into work, to your dismay, in the meeting before your shift starts you only hear of the supervisor getting credited for what you did. The unearned respect from the hierarchy creates what is known as the god complex. The god complex makes the supervisor feel like they are better than you and makes you feel disrespected and makes you lose your work ethic and compassion for that person and the company. Some of the most respected and accomplished companies are those that give credit where credit is due resulting in happier employees. Universal fall within this standard, they are a very respected and they give the proper amount of credit. Universal is the only company that I have worked for that I actually feel like part of a family. They give recognition and awards for their employees....
