THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS WORKSHEET Name: Alcantara, Mylene Alexandra Date: September 29, 2021Time:TF2:00-3:30 pm Watch “The Pursuit of Happyness” and answer the following questions. 1. What are some of the challenges Chris Gardner faced when trying to sell his bone density scanners? Some of Chris Gardner’s experiences or struggles that he faced just to sell his do for a living which is selling the bone density scanners are first, he went to different hospitals, talked to the doctors that they will be needing that kind of machine but they just rejected his offer because it’s too expensive and not worth it to but anymore as the machine was not that good invention for the hospital to use it. He’s having a hard time to sell the scanner in every hospital. When he parked his car to the side of the street, he always got a pile of tickets for fines until it got pulled over by the police. Another one is that when he left this bone density scanner to one stranger for which she took it for granted to steal it from him. She ran away with it and Chris chased her but at the end of the day, he went home without it. And another day passed by, he saw this girl in a train or bus station and immediately grabbed it after a long time of chasing. Another scenario was that when he rides a taxi with one of the manager/ staffs in a company, and he has no money to pay for the bill, he ran so fast and when he was able to catch the train, his hand with the scanner got stuck in the door and he has no choice but to let go of it and the beggar that he thought that this is the time machine was the one who got it. 2. Chris faced many challenges during the movie, yet he still achieved many of his goals. Describe a minimum of three decisions he made or behaviors/personality traits that he demonstrated that helped him reach his goals. Use specific examples from the movie to support the decisions you think were. At the start of the movie, we can already feel that Chris and his wife needs to work more, to overtime, to provide what they need every day especially they have Chris, their child. The first decision that he did that I believe one of the reasons for him to work hard is that choosing his child to be at his side always even when in times of dark or through downs. When his wife decided to go to New York to work in a restaurant of her sister’s

boyfriend, he didn’t let her wife to take his son away from him. He didn’t want his son experience having no father to be known just like him. So, even though he has no enough money and many debts to pay, he decided to be with his son and despite of having a hard time to find some place to stay. He did not lose hope every day and still looking for someone to buy his scanner, and applies for a job in a company that needs to have a 6month internship before having a permanent position as an employee/worker. In a ton of people that had been applied, they just choose one person and because of that, he’s being hesitant at first to continue and work hard more but at the end of the day, he still chooses to stay, to be calm and still, and face the reality of life that there is nothing easy to attain good life, instead put your best on it, work hard for it. As the movie goes by, the tenant knocked on their door, told him that he needed to pay for their rents, for almost 3 months and if not, they will be forced to leave and find another home. His attitude never changed and the way he handled the situation was in a calm state. There are many scenarios like this of being charged to all of his debts up to the extent of getting his money in a bank (he didn’t pay for taxes) that charged him $600 and the remaining balance he has is $34. At that time, he loses control and got angry because that’s the only money he had accumulated after some months of selling scanners. And when he went to one of his friends who owed him $14, he said that it got paid off by helping him move his things when they got kicked off. He just can’t take it anymore and kicked the trash can in the street and he and his son in that night stayed at the train station’s toilet room. Despite of that problem, having no own home, the child understands and not complains about it. He stayed by his father’s side and with that, has become Chris Gardner’s reason to work hard, his strength, his source of happiness. When in a part of his life called “internship,” there is one who likes the boss that always ordered him to buy him food, get him coffee, and many things. It just like that he’s the one who always got called when he needed something. Chris didn’t complain about this despite of having a busy day as an intern, as they tasked to call some clients, eat with them if ever, meet with them. Chris, as a very hardworking, did not have time to drink water just like others, to pee, to eat, to have a break time unlike others and because of that, those number of people he needed to talk to within a day has been met. Thus, I can

say that on how he handled the different kind of attitude or personality around him, makes a contribution, a betterment on what he has achieved in the end. He is humble and down to earth, a very hardworking guy and a loving father to his child, and lowkey yet tactful and determined person. 3. What were three financial decisions that Chris made during the Pursuit of Happyness and describe the consequences that resulted. Decision

Consequence

The first decision that Chris Gardner had He didn’t think of something, people’s made was investing his money to sell bone preference so that the money he used for density scanners as his work.

bone density scanners, would not be a waste. But, he, as a salesman, as a consequence, the target audience or buyer doesn’t really have interest at all because it’s expensive and useless for them. Even if he sold it, the income was not enough for them that results for more debts. His car got pulled over by the police so that

When he didn’t think of paying for his he has no vehicle or service for work and parking tickets

for accompanying his son to school. It also results for more debts to pay by him and his liabilities exceeds his assets. One example is that when one of his bosses in a company asked him to park the car in the parking lot but he took it and drove it because he has client to talk with, which is Mr. Walter Ribbon for the pension funds, and he ended up paying for the damages.

When he didn’t pay the taxes for about The government ended up getting his many months he needed to pay

money in the bank amounting to $600 and his remaining balance is $34. His life was keep getting darker and darker.

4. During the interview at Dean Witter, Martin Froh asked Chris “What would you say if a guy walked in for an interview without a shirt on and I hired him! What would you say?” What was Chris’s response? “He must have had on some really nice pants.” After he said this, those people in the room laughed hard and with that, Chris pulled the interview well that made him got the spot for an internship. 5. If you were in Chris’s position would you have attended the interview covered in paint? Why or why not? What did this show about Chris’s drive? If I am in Chris’ position, I would have attended the interview even if I am full of paints in my body and clothes, and having no decent uniform because if I ever do change my clothes, taking a bath, it would take a lot of time and I would be late in my interview time. One factor to consider in an interview is that we really need to be in time and Chris, having many struggles and happenings in his life, I think the interviewer would be considerate for him. Also, it may be a bad/negative or good/positive impact to the interviewer and to some people in the company, Chris still shows the determination and his smart side. Even though he showed up not prepared physically, his wisely and words of wisdom got it and he is mentally prepared. 6. In your own opinion, what does it really mean to live a good life? What qualifies as a good existence? For me, to live a good life doesn’t mean of just having or attaining or achieving all our dreams/goals in life successfully. Good life means that in the process of making, we are able to enjoy what we are doing despite of the difficulties we are able to face to get that certain position in life. We are able to be happy at the same time feel sad, stress,

tired, empty because we are human and it’s in nature on us to experience that. To live a good life means we have that like a “bucket list,” little by little, we can feel the enlightenment, the encouragement or the motivation in us, the self-satisfaction, the family satisfaction, and other people around us. Good life is like having a productive and wealthy lifestyle. Good may be means of “being a good person” to others that it makes them feel more worthy and reflects it to ourselves also. It also means of living having a freedom in terms of financial wherein we can do things now freely without hesitation or doubt. But as the discussion of the philosophers’ definition of good life, it affects my way of thinking of having a goof life. Now, it makes me more think that having a good life is not just about in the reality or in the worldly things. It does say to me to flourish our souls, our inner peace, inner mind, inner soul, to make our soul cleanse because what does it makes sense of achieving all our wants and needs in life if our own soul is not purely flourish. So, for me, as a servant, faith qualifies as a good existence. As a Catholic, we have come to our senses that we have religion and beliefs that always fall for or faith in God. We believe that good existence means being good to others, being grateful of what we have, being blessed, and everything that we do always has a factor of religion. Our beliefs and our doings are falling under God because He is the center of all. Another one is having a good character qualifies as a good existence because this will be engraved to the others’ hearts and this will be the counter part of our life that when we die, will remain to others. We can’t resist the reality that we are existing with purpose, and that purpose in our life will be needed to know by each of us....
