THE ROLE OF THE MONARCHY -the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) is a hereditary constitutional monarchy -the Royal family (=the Windsors) represent the oldest surviving monarchy in Europe -the monarch (Queen) is the head of state neutral in political debates -the monarch has no real political power his/ her power is limited to constitutional duties and representational functions
FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES OF THE MONARCH BRITISHNESS: -Head of State in the UK -Head of the Church in England -Commander-in-chief of the British Armed Forces (male members of the Royal family always serve in the military) -Ceremonial head of the Commonwealth countries CONSTITUTIONAL DUTIES: -the monarch formally appoints the prime minister after a general election -appoints the ministers on recommendation of the Prime Minister -can summon and dissolve the Parliament (only on the advice of the Prime Minister) -officially opens parliament each year after the summer recess and gives a speech -signs bills which have already been passed by the government -holds weekly audience to the Prime Minister in order to to discuss current government matters REPRESENTATIONAL FUNCTIONS: -supporting voluntary services and charities -visiting people in need and show sympathy e.g. after natural catastrophes
-taking a leading role in national celebrations -making state visits overseas -welcoming foreign Heads of State when they come to Britain -serves as a symbol of national unity, identity and stability Head of Nation -represents the country on a national and international level...
