1.

According to C. Wright Mills, what is the sociological imagination? What does the sociological imagination allow us to do (be sure to address the issues of history, biography, and society)? The sociological imagination allows an individual to alternate perspectives which would allow an individual to look beyond what is known to them, and to analyze society objectively. It allows one to understand the historical and social meaning of themselves in that point in time, and the understanding of one’s life and historical change. It allows us to understand that one live out their biography in a historical sequence, allowing them to contribute to society; that history and biography have a relationship to society.

2. Karey, who is in the 10th grade, has recently been diagnosed with an eating disorder. Engaging your sociological imagination, explain why eating disorders might be better considered a “public issue” rather than a “private trouble.” Eating disorders may be typically common in adolescence, and this could be the cause of how young women are portrayed in the media. With the hypersexualization of women in media, young girls find it difficult to keep up with this standard. Thus, some resorting to anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge- eating disorder. The more that these standards are forced on to young people, the more that may be diagnosed with eating disorders. When more and more teens are diagnosed with eating disorders, it makes it a public health issue, ultimately making it a public issue. 3.

Gavin, who is in 3rd grade and lives in a low-income neighborhood, performed belowaverage on a state-required achievement test. Millions of children find themselves in this situation. Use your sociological imagination to propose a solution to this public issue. 1

Because schools are given funding due to the property tax of the neighborhood the school is in, low income homes and poor education are seen to be related. A solution may be to help the school financially, which may possibly cause the neighborhood economic status to improve. Schools that give an excess amount of money to sports and other programs may be required to pay a tax that goes directly into helping the funding of other schools in poorer neighborhoods. Overtime, as the poorer schools improve and (hopefully) have a higher economic turnout, may in turn, help other financially struggling schools.
