The Sunnah and Hadith Definition of Sunnah Literal Meaning

Literally, Sunnah stands for clear path or a beaten track. Sunnah has been used to imply normative practice or an established course of conduct. The sunnah of an individual is a practice that he considers binding for himself and that he attempts to protect and uphold.

Technical meaning

Technically, Sunnah is defined as all that is narrated from the Prophet. It is defined as what was transmitted from the Messenger of Allah (peace be on him) of his words, acts and tacit approvals.

There are 3 types of sunnah under this classification:

Sayings of the Prophet

Sayings of the Prophet The acts of the Prophet

Sunnah qawliyyah Sunnah filiyyah

The tacit approval given by the Prophet

Sunnah Taqririyah

The Prophet intended to lay down the law or the explanation of the ahkam through his sayings. Generally, the word hadith is used for this type of Sunnah which means saying. However, the term hadith has a meaning narrower than that of sunnah.

Literally Hadith means a narrative, communication or news consisting of the factual account of an event. Technically, Hadith is the exclusive saying of the Prophet. In short, the term hadith is a narration of the sayings of the Prophet whereas Sunnah includes the sayings, doings and tacit approval of the Prophet whereby the law is deduced from it. Hadith in this sense is the vehicle of the carrier of the Sunnnah.

Sunnah is normally associated to the Prohpet Muhammad who is the messenger of Allah. Not all the verse of the Quran is stated clearly. Some of the words are implicit. Sunnah is the second primary source after Quran. The verse in al quran is already explicit and does not require any other interpretations. So normally we use sunnah to clarify or explain something else. Sunnah and Hadith Sunnah is the statement made by the Prophet Hadith is the narration of the Sunnah.
