Given the causes of crime specified in Hirschi’s Social Bond theory, what policies would you put into place to prevent or respond to crime?

According to Hirshi, there are 4 bonds to prevent delinquency: affectionate ties, commitment, involvement and belief. Some policies that I would incorporate into preventing or responding to crime are creating community outreach programs from families. Hirsch explains that affectionate ties with loved ones prevents crime. Children who have a close bond with their families’ and friends don’t want to disappoint them or let them down. Through community outreach programs, children will be busy completing activities and assignments with their loved ones. Being involved in these activities will create less free time in where they might become vulnerable or more subject to committing a crime. Having sport events and activities within a community will not only keep the children busy, but will develop a close-knit bonds with their loved ones and those around them. o Which of the nine propositions of Differential Association theory are illustrated by the song, Me & My Uncle? Do you think Social Learning theory is an improvement on Differential Association theory; why or why not? o o I believed that out of the 9 propositions of the DA theory, criminal behavior is learned is more accurately illustrated in the song, Me & My Uncle. In this song, we see how the narrator and his uncle have stopped at a bar after riding for days. His uncle begins drinking and playing cards with some “thugs” that were drunk and had money. Soon after we see that his uncle was accused of cheating in the game, and the cowboys got extremely upset. One of them called him out and on it and soon after, two more. Immediately preceding the accusations, the narrator shoots one of the cowboys and then another one trying to defend his uncle. Eventually, the uncle grabs the gold and the narrator ends up killing the uncle, taking the gold from him, and fleeing leaving his uncle behind. In the song, the narrator says, “he taught me well” meaning his uncle had taught him how to steal gold. During the chaos, his uncle grabbed the gold and starts to run. In my opinion, the narrator believes his uncle is one of the cowboys they initially had problems with and so he shoots him and takes the gold from him. He then proceeds to say that his uncle taught him everything he knows and that he loves the gold. It seems that he has been doing this for a long time and that is all he knows.

o According to Anderson, how do the drug trade and sex contribute to the Code of the Street? What do you think of Anderson’s theory so far? 
