Wolf, K. A. (2014). Critical perspectives on nursing as bodywork. Advances in Nursing Science, 37 (2), 147-160. Please read the following sections from the above article: Abstract Introduction ‘Nursing as Body Relationships’ ‘Nursing as Gendered Work’ ‘The Privilege and Taint of Bodywork’ ‘Nursing Advocacy for Nursing Body’ ‘Conclusion’

Small Group in-class Discussion: 1. The author uses the term bodywork to describe caring. Based on your understanding of the article, how would you describe bodywork in nursing (or any other healthcare profession)? I. Challenging the self-identity of nursing as well as the social status of the profession II. Serves as a window to view cultural meanings and perspectives that surround the body III. Nursing reflects the diversity and often-contradictory images and meanings associated with bodywork as gendered. IV. Caring for the body V. Nurses (are) ordered to care in a society that fails to value caring VI. Focused on wait times and money VII. The bodywork is looking at the patient as the physical work but also as the person attached to that body – psychosocial. 2.Has gender influenced the work nurses do and how society views this work? If so, how? I. Society views nursing as a women’s job II. Reproduces domesticity - wives/mothers and providing domestic work. Symbolic III. Men will get more promotions over the female body – want men to have opportunities to improve based on the need of them for certain situations. based on image IV. Seen as being feminine but medicine seen as men – wedge between two professions V. Sexualized in society 3.On the second last paragraph on p. 150, the author writes: “Nurses’ work places them in....the overlapping and interpenetrating margins between professional constraint and personal intimacy”. Discuss what you think the author is referring to here. I.

Relates to maintaining professional boundaries but also still maintaining a therapeutic relationship

II. Be able to be empathetic and care for the patient and their situation – avoid sympathy ‘I’m really sorry’ III. Referenced by the CNO practice standards IV. Caring for patients vs caring about V. As a student nurse, would you go to the patient you cared for funeral? Did you build a therapeutic relationship? What was the purpose of going? - CNO VI. What about gifts? VII. When unaware of certain situations – would you be comfortable charting it? Talk to colleagues for opinions. Did the situation make you uncomfortable? Were there strings attached? 4.The author states that nurses are repeatedly reported to be one of the most trusted professions, yet many in society have questioned why someone would ever want to do “such dirty work”. What do you think positions nursing as a trusted profession yet a less desirable profession? I.

You trust the nurse to get into that close proximity to you (bathing, lice combing) however those acts don’t attract you II. Society misses the aspect of the therapeutic piece – changes the way we view the profession III. The patient is relying on us but it is less desired because of that dirty work 5.For those of you with health care experience, what do you think of the ideas presented in the article? Do they match your experience?...
