Photos Photograph TLC plates quickly, as soon as they are dry. Exposure to air will cause some bands to change color.

Photo 1 Insert the photo of the TLC plate from Activity 1. The following should be visible in this photo:  All bands on the plate, with each marked in the center with a pencil and numbered

1. Why do you think Solvent 2 produced more visible bands of pigments? a. Due to the larger difference in polarity between octanol and the silica gel, Solvent 2 should produce more pigment bands with better separation. The more polar the solvent the less bands will be visible. 2. Were the pigments observed using Solvent 1 different from the pigments you observed using Solvent 2? Explain your answer. a. Yes, Solvent 1 contains acetone, which is less polar than the silica gel but much more polar than the octanol. Ketones and alcohols are © 2016 Carolina Biological Supply Company

6 hydrocarbons that contain oxygen atoms attached to the carbon chains. The areas around the oxygen atoms are polar. Both solvents produced chlorophyll b. chlorophylls and carotenoids are very soluble in alkanes and ketones, and slightly less soluble in alcohols. Alkanes are pure hydrocarbons and are nonpolar molecules. Ketones and alcohols are hydrocarbons that contain oxygen atoms attached to the carbon chains. The areas around the oxygen atoms are polar.
